Teresa M.V.D. Pinho e Melo studied Chemistry at the University of Coimbra, where she graduated, got her MSc and her PhD in Organic Chemistry. She was a Research Fellow at the University of Liverpool (1992-1993). She received her Habilitation in Organic Chemistry in 2003. Teresa Pinho e Melo is currently Associate Professor at the University of Coimbra, subdiretor of the Coimbra Chemistry Centre (CQC), Group Leader of the Organic Chemistry Group of CQC, Coordinator of the MSc in Medicinal Chemistry and collaborator of iMed.ULisboa and CFisUC. She is Past-President of the International Society of Heterocyclic Chemistry and Titular Member of the Organic and Biomolecular Chemistry Division of IUPAC (International Union of Pure and Applied Chemistry) (2024-2025). She was President of the Division of Organic Chemistry of the Portuguese Chemical Society (2016-2017), Co-President of the International Society of Heterocyclic Chemistry (2022-2024) and Director of the Department of Chemistry, University of Coimbra (2015-2019). Her research interests are mainly in the area of synthetic and mechanistic heterocyclic chemistry with a strong focus on medicinal chemical applications, with particular emphasis on cancer and infectious diseases. Teresa Pinho e Melo has been recognized as one of the World’s Top 2% Scientists (Stanford University ranking) and has received the FCTUC 2019 Award for the Impact of International Publications. Her team was also recipient of several awards namely “Born from Knowledge Ideas 2020” (Portuguese National Agency for Innovation), R2 Value's 2022 (New University of Lisbon) and Gilead GÉNESE 2022 for the work on “Spiro-beta-lactams as host-directed broad-spectrum antivirals".
