Project Ener 1000 and Unic
The ENER 1000 was the first computer designed and produced industrially in Portugal.
The project began in 1980, at the Department of Electrical Engineering of the University of Coimbra. Professor António Dias de Figueiredo had the idea, and challenged me, João Gabriel Silva, one of the members of his nascent research group, to coordinate it.
In 1982, the company Enertrónica became interested in the project and, until the end of 1985, produced the first version. From that year onwards, the new version, called Unic, began to be produced by another company, RIMA, until the end of 1990, when its market window ended.
In memory of this project an exhibition was set up at the Department of Computer Engineering of the University of Coimbra, opened on January 12, 2024. It has a web version at https://dei.uc.pt/museu/do-ener-ao-espaco/en/. On this website is the story of Ener [here] and UNIC [here]. There is also a lot of technical information.
An opinion piece I wrote about the Ener/Unic project is here (in Portuguese).
On this page the objective is to complete the information contained in the web version of the exhibition, essentially through the listing of documents, news and reports relating to the Ener/UNIC project.
To complete the information available on the exhibition website, other sources of information relating to the Ener/Unic project are gathered here:
