Assistant Professor at IBILI (Faculty of Medicine of the University of Coimbra).

Member of the Staff and Scientific Council of the ICNAS (PET Center of the University of Coimbra).

Teaches the following courses at the University of Coimbra: Biophysics (Graduation in Dental Medicine), Digital Image Processing (Graduations in Biomedical Engineering, Physics Engineering, Astronomy and Space Instrumentation), Biomathematics (Graduation in Medicine) and collaborates in other disciplines related with medical imaging.

Research is focused on the optimization of data acquisition and processing methodologies for medical imaging, namely Positron Emission Tomography (PET). Experience includes the development of data correction techniques for PET and the development of iterative image reconstruction algorithms. Current projects include collaboration in the development of PET systems dedicated to mammography, small animal imaging and whole body human imaging. Current interests include the application of Resistive Plate Chambers (RPCs) detectors to PET, Time-Of-Flight PET, wide axial Field-Of-View PET systems, multi-modality systems, the study of data correction techniques and multi-scale image reconstruction.
