PhD in Biology from the University of Coimbra (2008) in the frame of the Doctoral Programme in Biomedicine and Experimental Biology, Joana Cardoso da Costa (JC) is currently an assistant researcher and guest lecturer at the Centre for Functional Ecology and Associated Laboratory Terra, Department of Life Sciences, University of Coimbra and Director and Technical Manager of the Laboratory for Phytopathology of Pedro Nunes Institute ("Official Laboratory" recognized by DGAV and accredited by IPAC).

JC's research interests are focused on the detection of and research into plant pathology (diagnosis, microbial ecology and epidemiology). In parallel, she studies the soil and plant microbiota as ecosystem service providers fundamental to the resilience, restoration and conservation of agroecosystems. These research lines have been developed in the framework of several projects coordinated by JC: Integrated Program of I&D CULTIVAR (CEO, 2.3M€ - CENTRO2020), i9kiwi Operational Group (PI, 470k€ - FEADER) and XylOut (PI, 290€ - FCT), among others. JC coordinates the Strategic Research Committee of the Ibero-American network IBERXYFAS (CYTED) and was the WG1 leader of COST Action CA16107 EuroXanth. In parallel, JC is a team member of several projects: Ecostack (H2020 RIA 10M€); GOOD (HE 6M€), RedeSusTerra (PRR), etc.

She is an evaluator of the Final Scientific Reports of the IC&DT 2019-2022 projects CA Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries (FCT, 2020-2023), expert and rapporteur for the Strategic Agenda for Agri-Food, Forestry and Biodiversity R&I (FCT, 2019-2021), and evaluator expert for the European Commission IxF-PEOPLE - MARIE CURIE ACTIONS (2017-2019).
