Ângela Freitas is a Geographer and a Researcher at the Centre of Studies in Geography and Spatial Planning, University of Coimbra (CEGOT-UC) in the University of Coimbra, where she has been conducting research in the field of geography of population health and well-being, with a focus on urban health. 

She is a PhD candidate in Human Geography at the University of Coimbra, with a thesis on Public policies and urban health equity. A place-based framework for municipal health planning, under the supervision of Full Professor Paula Santana. For the period 2017-2021 she was a recipient of an Individual Doctoral Fellowship from the Portuguese Foundation of Science and Technology (Grant SFRH/BD/123091/2016). 

She holds a Master in Geographical Information Systems and Spatial Planning by University of Porto (2011) and a Bachelor in Geography, Spatial Planning and Development by University of Coimbra (2006). 

Since 2007, she has been working as a research fellow at the University of Coimbra in several scientific projects funded by European Commission (H2020, EIT-Health, Erasmus) and national funds (FCT), as well as in different applied projects (see Projects below). 

In 2014, Angela has been awarded with Ryoichi Sasakawa Young Leaders Fellowship Fund (SYLFF) and in 2018 received funding for a doctoral research period as Visiting Researcher in the Institute of Urban and Regional Development in the University of California, Berkeley. 

In the last years, she has been involved in the organization and content production of urban health trainings, namely the URB_HealthS pilot training for municipal technicians in urban health (Coimbra, 2020) and the Summer Course and Massive Open Online Course (MOOC) on Urbanisation and Health (available in Coursera since 2021), jointly developed with University of Copenhagen and Universidad Politecnica de Madrid.

She was a member of the Organizing Committee of the 14th Internacional Conference on Urban Health (ICUH 2017) and the I Conference in Health Geography of Portuguese Speaking Countries (GEOSAUDE 2014).

She is author and co-author of several peer-reviewed articles (in journals with impact factor), books, book chapters and project reports and presented research papers at several national and international conferences.

Her research interests lie on the relationship between local environment and health, urban planning and health, policy health impact assessment, local governance, participatory research and place-based assessment tools and indicators.
