João Pedro Martins, senior member of the Portuguese Engineers Association, concluded is Master in Civil Engineering at the Faculty of Science and Technology of the University of Coimbra in 2009.
Between 2008 and 2010 he developed his professional career at the construction sector as a structural engineer of steel, concrete and composite structures at Tetraplano Engenharia, COBA group, where he collaborated in the design of several projects.
Since 2009, he attended the curricular part of the Doctoral programme in Steel and Composite Construction at the Civil Engineering Department of the Faculty of Science and Technology of the University of Coimbra concluding it in 2011 with approval of his Project of Thesis.
Between 2010 and 2014 he was granted by the Portuguese Foundation for Science and Technology with an individual research grant to pursue the doctoral studies in the scientific area of Civil Engineering. During that period, he developed his research in the stability of thin-walled steel structures, culminating, in November 2014, with the final approval of his Ph.D. thesis in Steel and Composite Construction.
Since the conclusion of the Ph.D., he has been integrated in the research unit ISISE – Institute for Sustainability and Innovation in Structural Engineering, where he has been participating in the elaboration of research projects applications and managing several research projects, both national and international. Currently, he is the scientific coordinator of 2 nationally funded research projects by the Portuguese Foundation for Science and Technology and researcher in several other national and international research projects. Additionally, he has also participated in projects with the industry and he is expert appointed in court actions.
In parallel, he has been lecturing at the University of Coimbra in the Master in Civil Engineering and in the Master and Doctoral Programme in Steel and Composite Construction as part-time Invited Lecturer in the academic years 2013/2014 and 2014/2015 and as full-time Invited Assistant Professor in the academic years 2015/2016 and 2016/2017. He has participated in several courses and he was/is scientific supervisor of 14 Master dissertations and 3 Ph.D. dissertations. Since the academic year 2017/2018 until the present date, he is full-time Invited Assistant Researcher at the Civil Engineering Department of the Faculty of Science and Technology of the University of Coimbra.
He is author/co-author of 21 papers in peer-reviewed international scientific papers and 43 papers in national and international conferences. He regularly participates in the reviewing process for Thin-Walled Structures, Engineering Structures, Journal of Constructional Steel Research, Structures, Steel Construction – Design & research, Proceedings of the Institution of Civil Engineers – Structures & buildings e Mechanics of Advanced Materials and Structures. Up to this date he has reviewed a total of 32 scientific papers.
