I have a Ph.D in Physics and I am an Associate Professor in the Physics Department of the University of Coimbra, where I am the Coordinator of the PhD Program in Biomedical Engineering.
My scientific background is in electronic and optical instrumentation. I started my scientific career in the field of Nuclear Electronics and worked in Real-Time Data Acquisition and Timing Systems for space (my graduate thesis was done in contract with ESA – European Space Agency) and nuclear applications (electronics for nuclear radiation detectors; timing and control systems for nuclear fusion experiments).
I shifted my research to Biomedical Instrumentation, focusing mainly in ocular fluorescence. I have done work in lens and retinal fluorescence and in corneal confocal microscopy. Currently, I work mainly on ocular functional imaging.
I am also a co-founder of several technology-based companies.
