Chemical Engineering, mainly in the field of Pulp and Paper technology, including characterization of cellulosic materials and Biorefinery: 

  • effect of cooking conditions on the chemical properties of Eucalyptus globulus kraft pulps: kappa number, viscosity, carboxylic, glucuronic and hexenuronic acids contents, lignin, cellulose and pentosan contents
  • chemical characterization of wood, kraft liquors and pulps;
  • kinetics studies involving delignification and uronic and hexenuronic degradation during kraft pulping;
  • studies on alkali and lignin mass transfer rates between the liquor and the inside of wood chips
  • pulps bleaching ability towards different bleaching chemicals
  • chemical characterization of effluents and studies on their environmental impact
  • studies of different strategies in pulp bleaching to reduce effluents load and pollution (ECF, ECF-light and TCF) 
  • studies of enzymes (xylanases) bleaching on brightness stability and on chlorine dioxide and hydrogen peroxide consumptions;
  • optimization and modelling of industrial bleaching processes: one and two stages oxygen delignification and hydrogen peroxide stage (atmospheric or pressurized with oxygen)
