Rita Basílio de Simões é Professora Associada com Agregação da Faculdade de Letras da Universidade de Coimbra (FLUC), integrada no Departamento de Filosofia, Comunicação e Informação, cuja Secção de Comunicação coordena. Atualmente, é também membro do Conselho Pedagógico da FLUC.

É Doutorada em Ciências da Comunicação, Mestre em Comunicação e Jornalismo e Licenciada em Jornalismo, pela mesma instituição. Possui ainda uma Pós-graduação em Direito da Comunicação pelo Instituto Jurídico da Comunicação, da Faculdade de Direito da Universidade de Coimbra.

É investigadora integrada do Centro de Estudos Sociais (CES) da Universidade de Coimbra e colaboradora do Centro de Estudos Interdisciplinares da Universidade de Coimbra (CEIS20) e do Instituto de Comunicação da NOVA (ICNOVA), da Universidade Nova de Lisboa.

Coordena o Grupo de Trabalho em Género e Sexualidades da Associação Portuguesa de Ciências da Comunicação (SOPCOM) e é coordenadora nacional do Global Media Monitoring Project (GMMP) – Who Makes the News?, promovido pela World Association for Christian Communication.

A sua investigação tem-se centrado na comunicação e nos média a partir de um horizonte interdisciplinar, abrangendo a sociologia do jornalismo, os estudos feministas e de género do espaço público, os estudos críticos da Internet e a criminologia, e incidido em temáticas tais como produção e representações mediáticas, espaço público, crime e justiça, média digitais, violência, discurso de ódio, tecnologias digitais e regulação dos média.

Tem coordenado e participado em projetos e redes de investigação, nacionais e internacionais. Atualmente, coordena a participação portuguesa no GMMP 2025 e é investigadora do projeto UnCover – Sexual Violence in Portuguese Mediascape (2022.03964.PTDC | 3/2023 a 2/2026).

Foi investigadora responsável pelo projeto Violência online contra as mulheres: prevenir e combater a misoginia e a violência em contexto digital a partir da experiência da pandemia de COVID-19 (Gender Research4Covid-19 – FCT Proj. 58), e corresponsável pelo projeto MyGender – Práticas mediadas de jovens adultos: promover justiça de género nas e através de aplicações móveis (PTDC/COM-CSS/5947/2020 | 3/2021 a 10/2024), ambos financiados pela FCT e desenvolvidos na FLUC.

Fora da academia, integra o comité de peritos do Conselho da Europa sobre violência contra mulheres e raparigas facilitada pela tecnologia.

Rita Basílio de Simões is an Associate Professor with Habilitation at the Faculty of Arts and Humanities of the University of Coimbra (FLUC), working in the Department of Philosophy, Communication and Information, where she coordinates the Communication section. She is currently also a member of FLUC’s Pedagogical Council.

She holds a PhD in Communication Sciences, a Master’s in Communication and Journalism, and a Bachelor’s degree in Journalism, all from the same institution. She also completed a postgraduate program in Communication Law at the Legal Institute of Communication, Faculty of Law, University of Coimbra.

She is a full researcher at the Centre for Social Studies (CES) of the University of Coimbra and a collaborator with the Interdisciplinary Research Centre of the University of Coimbra (CEIS20) and the NOVA Institute of Communication (ICNOVA) at NOVA University Lisbon.

She coordinates the Gender and Sexualities Working Group of the Portuguese Association of Communication Sciences (SOPCOM) and is the national coordinator of the Global Media Monitoring Project (GMMP) – Who Makes the News?, promoted by the World Association for Christian Communication.

Her research has focused on communication and the media from an interdisciplinary perspective, encompassing the sociology of journalism, feminist and gender studies of the public sphere, critical Internet studies, and criminology. She has worked on topics such as media production and representations, the public sphere, crime and justice, digital media, violence, hate speech, digital technologies, and media regulation.

She has coordinated and participated in national and international research projects and networks. She is currently coordinating the Portuguese participation in GMMP 2025 and is a researcher on the project UnCover – Sexual Violence in the Portuguese Mediascape (2022.03964.PTDC | 3/2023–2/2026).

She was the principal investigator of the project Online violence against women: preventing and combating misogyny and violence in digital contexts based on experiences during the COVID-19 pandemic (Gender Research4Covid-19 – FCT Project 58), and co-principal investigator of the project MyGender – Mediated practices of young adults: promoting gender justice in and through mobile applications (PTDC/COM-CSS/5947/2020 | 3/2021–10/2024), both funded by the Portuguese Foundation for Science and Technology (FCT) and carried out at FLUC.

Outside academia, she is a member of the Council of Europe’s committee of experts on technology-facilitated violence against women and girls.
