Rita Basílio de Simões é Professora Associada com Agregação em Ciências da Comunicação na Faculdade de Letras da Universidade de Coimbra (FLUC), onde integra o Departamento de Filosofia, Comunicação e Informação e coordena a Secção de Comunicação. É membro do Conselho Pedagógico da FLUC.
Doutorada em Ciências da Comunicação, Mestre em Comunicação e Jornalismo e Licenciada em Jornalismo pela Universidade de Coimbra, possui ainda Pós-graduação em Direito da Comunicação pelo Instituto Jurídico da Comunicação da Faculdade de Direito da mesma universidade.
É investigadora integrada do Centro de Estudos Sociais (CES) e colaboradora do Centro de Estudos Interdisciplinares da Universidade de Coimbra (CEIS20) e do ICNOVA – Instituto de Comunicação da NOVA. Integra os órgãos sociais da Associação Portuguesa de Estudos Sobre as Mulheres (APEM) e coordenou, entre 2019 e 2026, o Grupo de Trabalho em Género e Sexualidades da Associação Portuguesa de Ciências da Comunicação (SOPCOM).
A sua investigação situa-se na interseção entre comunicação, média, género e tecnologias digitais, desenvolvendo um enquadramento interdisciplinar que articula sociologia do jornalismo, estudos feministas e de género do espaço público, estudos críticos da Internet, criminologia e regulação dos média. É coordenadora nacional do Global Media Monitoring Project (GMMP) – Who Makes the News? desde 2019. Integra o projeto UnCover – Sexual Violence in Portuguese Mediascape (2022.03964.PTDC | 2023–2026), financiado pela FCT e desenvolvido no CES.
Foi investigadora responsável do projeto Violência online contra as mulheres: prevenir e combater a misoginia e a violência em contexto digital a partir da experiência da pandemia de COVID-19 (Gender Research4Covid-19 – FCT Proj. 58) e investigadora corresponsável do projeto MyGender – Práticas mediadas de jovens adultos: promover justiça de género nas e através de aplicações móveis (PTDC/COM-CSS/5947/2020 | 2021–2024), ambos financiados pela FCT e desenvolvidos na FLUC.
Entre 2024 e 2025 integrou o comité de peritos do Conselho da Europa sobre violência contra mulheres e raparigas facilitada pela tecnologia.

Rita Basílio de Simões is Associate Professor (with Habilitation) in Communication Sciences at the Faculty of Arts and Humanities of the University of Coimbra (FLUC), where she is a member of the Department of Philosophy, Communication and Information and coordinates the Communication Section. She also serves on the Faculty’s Pedagogical Council.
She holds a PhD in Communication Sciences, an MA in Communication and Journalism, and a BA in Journalism from the University of Coimbra. She also completed a postgraduate degree in Media Law at the Institute for Legal Studies in Communication, Faculty of Law, University of Coimbra.
She is an Integrated Researcher at the Centro de Estudos Sociais (CES) and a Collaborating Researcher at the Centro de Estudos Interdisciplinares da Universidade de Coimbra (CEIS20) and at ICNOVA - NOVA Institute of Communication. She serves on the governing board of the Associação Portuguesa de Estudos Sobre as Mulheres (APEM) and coordinated the Gender and Sexualities Working Group of the Associação Portuguesa de Ciências da Comunicação (SOPCOM) from 2019 to 2026.
Her research is situated at the intersection of media, gender, digital technologies, and public sphere studies, adopting an interdisciplinary approach that brings together sociology of journalism, feminist and gender studies, critical internet studies, criminology, and media regulation. Her work focuses particularly on:
Media representations and media production
Gender, violence, and online hate speech
Crime, justice, and the public sphere
Technology-facilitated violence
Digital platforms and media regulation
Since 2019, she has been the national coordinator of the Global Media Monitoring Project (GMMP) – Who Makes the News?. She previously served as Principal Investigator of the project Online Violence Against Women: Preventing and Combating Misogyny and Digital Violence in the Context of the COVID-19 Pandemic (Gender Research4Covid-19 – FCT Project 58), and as Co-Principal Investigator of MyGender – Mediated Practices of Young Adults: Promoting Gender Justice In and Through Mobile Applications (PTDC/COM-CSS/5947/2020 | 2021–2024), both funded by FCT and developed at FLUC.
Between 2024 and 2025, she was a member of the Committee of Experts of the Council of Europe on technology-facilitated violence against women and girls.
