Full Professor at the Department of Civil Engineering of the Faculty of Science and Technology of the University of Coimbra (Portugal), lectures courses in the area of Hydraulics, Hydrology and Water Resources. He graduated in Civil Engineering from the University of Coimbra in 1982, obtained the M.Sc. in Water Resources Management (1987) and the Ph.D. in Environmental Sciences (1989) both from the Wageningen University (The Netherlands).
Area of specialization: hydrology, urban hydrology, drainage and soil conservation and water.
At present: Coordinator of the Scientific Research Area of Hydraulics, Water Resources and Environment of the University of Coimbra; Past-Coordinator of the Euromediterranean Network of Experimental and Representative Basins (ERB); Coordinator of Thematic Line 1 - Hydraulics, Hydrology and Sedimentary Environment of MARE - Marine and Environmental Sciences Centre.
Publications: more than 450 technical and scientific publications, 135 of them in international journals; Guest-editor of special issues of, among others, journals Physics and Chemistry of the Earth, Advances in Water Resources, Non-Linear Processes in Geophysics, Die Bodenkultur, Journal for Land Management, Food and Environment, Journal of Hydrology and Hydromechanics.
Services rendered: Participated in the organisation of several national and international scientific meetings held in Portugal, Spain, Austria, France, Poland, Brazil, Romania and Russia; Responsible researcher for the Portuguese participation in some European Community projects (TEMPUS and COST) and for several national projects (FCT - Portuguese Foundation for Science and Technology; CNPq - Brazil); Coordinator of several editions of the Master´s Programme in Hydraulics and Water Resources of the University of Coimbra and supervised 30 (concluded) M.Sc. and Ph.D. theses.
