- Nuno Simões is an Associate Professor in the Civil Engineering Department at the University of Coimbra and a Member of the Board of Directors of Itecons - Institute for Research and Technological Development in Construction Sciences. He is also the scientific and technical supervisor of the energy, hygrothermal, and exterior cladding systems laboratories at Itecons.
He is a member of CERIS - Civil Engineering Research and Innovation for Sustainability, coordinating the thematic strand “Product Development in the Civil Engineering Industries”. He is a member of the Scientific Coordination and Management Committee and the Committee for Pedagogical and Academic Affairs of the Energy for Sustainability (EfS) initiative, which offers the Master's program in Energy for Sustainability and the PhD program in Sustainable Energy Systems (part of the MIT-Portugal Program).
He has participated in more than 50 funded research projects (18 as PI at Itecons), has published more than 85 articles in peer-reviewed journals, and is a co-author of over 195 communications at international conferences. His h-index is 21. He has supervised 9 doctoral theses and more than 60 master's theses. He is currently involved in 16 projects (5 as PI at Itecons) and is supervising 4 doctoral theses.
He was the Coordinator of the Executive Committee of the task group set by the Portuguese General Directorate for Energy and Geology (DGEG) and the Portuguese Energy Agency (ADENE) to transpose the EPBD directive (Energy Performance Building Directive) and review the national building thermal regulation codes (used between 2013 and 2020). He is a National Qualified trainer and expert of the National System for Energy and Indoor Air Quality Certification.
He was a member of the organizing committee of 18 national and international conferences. Since 2022, he has been the co-chair of the CEES conference series (CEES 2023, Funchal; CEES 2025, Bari).
