Luís António Malheiro Meneses do Vale holds a BA, MA, and PhD in Law (Legal and Political Sciences), all completed at the Faculty of Law of the University of Coimbra, the latter two both under the supervision of J. J. Gomes Canotilho. At that Faculty, he served as Monitor and Teaching Assistant and is currently an Assistant Professor, Coordinator of the Master’s Programme in Law, and Researcher at the Institute of Legal Research. He has also been actively involved in academic governance, having served as a member of the Faculty’s Executive Council, Pedagogical Council, and Faculty Assembly.
He is a founding member and current co-chair of the Portuguese chapter of the International Society of Public Law, as well as an international associate of the Society. He is a member of the Portuguese Association of Constitutional Law and of the Portuguese Association of Philosophy of Law, Legal Theory and Social Philosophy (the Portuguese section of the Internationale Vereinigung für Rechts- und Wirtschaftsphilosophie), where he currently serves as President of the General Assembly. He is also a member of the German–Portuguese Jurists’ Association, the Centre for Biomedical Law, Ius Gentium Conimbrigae, the Portuguese Society of Rhetoric, and the Laboratory of Ethics and Applied Rationality of the Faculty of Arts and Humanities of the University of Coimbra.
In addition, he serves on the Board of the Alumni Association of the Faculty of Law of the University of Coimbra, is President of República do Direito, a Coimbra-based association of jurists, coordinates the Coimbra branch of Causa Pública, a progressive public policy think tank, and was recently appointed as an external member of the Ethics Committee of the Faculty of Psychology and Educational Sciences at the University of Coimbra.
He studies, writes, teaches, and intervenes publicly mainly in the fields of the philosophy, dogmatics, and methodology of public law and constitutional law, with particular attention to constitutional normativity and constitutionality, especially in their social dimension.
