Research

He is Director of the Research Centre ISISE – Institute for Sustainability and Innovation in Structural Engineering. It consists of a joint venture between the Universidade of Coimbra and the Universidade of Minho created in 2007 and was rated Excellent in the 2014 Research Assessment (2008-2014), comprising 60 full-time PhD members.

The vision of ISISE is to increase the structural and functional performance of Civil Engineering Works, from a perspective of advanced technology, innovation and a knowledge based economy with a wide focus that ranges from materials to integral systems with a life cycle approach. Despite the ISISE focus on structural engineering, it is clearly recognized that progress and innovation in Civil Engineering Worksrequire a holistic approach whereby the structural performance cannot be separated from the functional performance and other related aspects, such as social, environmental and business considerations. ISISE aims at promoting innovation and sustainability, with a link to the construction sector industry, focusing on: REHABILITATION: Reshaping the built environment and INDUSTRIALIZATION: Construction as an advanced industrial process: from material to system.

ISISE is organized in 4 Research Groups, related to Historical and Masonry Structures (HMS), Functional Performance (FP),Steel and Mixed Construction Technologies (SMCT), and Structural Composites (SC).

He chairs the Research GroupSMCT – Steel and Mixed Construction Technologies that comprises 58 researchers (18 researchers with PhD and 40 PhD students and grant holders) with the following focus areas: (A) FIRE SAFETY; (B) EARTHQUAKE ENGINEERING; (C) BLAST AND IMPACT; (D) CONNECTIONS; (E) NONLINEAR DESIGN AND STABILITY((E.1) Advanced Design and (E.2) Cold-Formed and Modular Construction); (F) COMPOSITE AND MIXED CONSTRUCTION((F.1) Steel-Concrete Composite; (F.2) Steel & Glass;(G) WIND TOWERS & RENEWABLES; (H) MARITIME ENGINEERING((H.1) OFFSHORE STRUCTURESand (H.2) NAVAL ENGINEERING); (I) TIMBER CONSTRUCTION, in close cooperation and coordinated action with the Research Group FP – Functional Performance that comprises 18 researchers (8 researchers with PhD and 10 PhD students and grant holders)with the following focus areas:(J)ENERGY EFFICIENCY; (K) INTEGRAL LIFETIME DESIGN and(L) DYNAMICS AND ACOUSTICS. Both groups share 8 laboratory and administrative technicians.

His activity strongly covers the following aspects: (i) connections, (ii) nonlinear design and stability, and (iii) sustainability, life-time engineering, monitoring and maintenance.

In this context, he achieved the following results:

• Author of 16 books, editor of 17 books, 146 scientific papers published in peer-reviewed international journals (124 in journals listed in the Science Citation Index Expanded (ISI Web of Knowledge)) and 496 papers published in international (293) and national (203) conference proceedings;

• Supervision of 19 PhD thesis and 55 MSc thesis already concluded. Currently supervises 9 PhD thesis and 6 MSc thesis (full list in appendix).

• Member of the Scientific or Organising Committees or Keynote Speaker of 113 international or national conferences (full list in appendix).

• Coordination and participation in 57 international (35) and national (22) research projects with funding on a competitive basis, totalling 61.8 M€ of global budget and 15.1 M€ of budget for his research centre since 2005 and 10 international thematic networks (full list in appendix).
