Short CV
Paulo Amado Mendes graduated in Civil Engineering, at the University of Coimbra (UC), in 1995; had his MSc in Civil Engineering, specialization in Hydraulics and Water Resources, at the University of Coimbra, in 2001; and completed his PhD in Civil Engineering, specialization in Construction Sciences, at the University of Coimbra, in 2010.
Presently, he is an Associate Professor at the Department of Civil Engineering of the University of Coimbra, where he has been lecturing subjects on the scientific areas of Construction and Building Sciences, Acoustics, Numerical Methods and Hydraulics.
In the scope of Masters Courses in the Department of Civil Engineering, at University of Coimbra, he has supervised 38 concluded MSc theses; in the scope of PhD Courses in Civil Engineering, he has supervised 4 concluded PhD Theses; presently he supervises 6 PhD students and 5 MSc students.
He is one of the Coordinators of the Master Course on Acoustic and Energy Efficiency for a Sustainable Construction, lectured at the Department of Civil Engineering of the University of Coimbra. He is local coordinator at UC of the international Erasmus Mundus Joint Master Course WAVES: Acoustics Vibrations Engineering Sound, promoted by the University of Coimbra, Universitat Politècnica de València, Aix-Marseille Université and École Centrale Marseille.
As a researcher member, he integrates the Institute for Sustainability and Innovation in Structural Engineering - ISISE at the University of Coimbra, and belongs to the Functional Performance - FP research group, while he coordinates the Acoustics and Vibrations - A&V research cluster team within FP.
The main scientific areas of research comprise: civil engineering and applied and building physics and mechanics; wave propagation in elastic and acoustic media; and numerical methods for acoustics and vibrations. The present research interests include: wave scattering by cracks or heterogeneities in elastic and acoustic media; numerical modelling with finite elements method, boundary element methods and other numerical meshless methods; non-destructive evaluation techniques and structural health monitoring; and building, environmental, historical and applied acoustics; and acoustics materials, systems and metamaterials.
He has participated as a researcher team member and coordinated several supported research and applied research projects, in the area of Construction Sciences, being co-author of 57 papers published in indexed peer reviewed international scientific journals, 5 book chapters and more than 151 papers published in international and national conference proceedings.
