Short biographical note

António Pais Antunes is a Professor at the Department of Civil Engineering (DEC) of the University of Coimbra (Portugal). He holds a Diploma in Civil Engineering from this university and a PhD in Applied Sciences from the Catholic University of Louvain. He has been a Visiting Fellow at Princeton University (1997/98), an Invited Professor at EPF Lausanne (2010/11), a Visiting Professor at MIT, USA (2013/14), and a Visiting Researcher at the University of Bergamo (2018/19). His teaching and research focus on Spatial Planning and Transport Systems. The specific subjects he pursued during his career include public facility location, land-use planning, road network design and conservation, urban transport planning (vehicle sharing, electric mobility, public transport) and, in more recent years, air transport planning. This activity, carried out in the framework of 28 research projects and actions and through the supervision of 24 PhD students, has led to more than 200 scientific publications, including over 60 articles in peer-reviewed journals, among which Environment and Planning A and B, European Journal of Operational Research, Journal of Transport Geography, Transportation Research A, B and E, Transportation Science and other leading titles in his work fields. António Pais Antunes was the President of DEC (2006-2008) and a member of UC's General Council (2016-2020). Currently he is the Deputy Director of CITTA – Research Centre for Territory Transports and Environment (an R&D unit of the Portuguese Foundation for Science and Technology), and the Coordinator of the Doctoral Programs in Spatial Planning and in Transport Systems at the University of Coimbra.
