José António Raimundo Mendes da Silva (short CV)

 Born in Coimbra in 1960.

 Degree in Civil Engineering (University of Coimbra, Portugal)

 Master in Building Construction (University of Porto, Portugal)

 PhD in Civil Engineering (University of Coimbra, Portugal)

 Associate Professor at the Civil Engineering Department of the University of Coimbra where he coordinates the Master in Rehabilitation of Buildings and teaches in the domain of Construction Technology, Building Rehabilitation, Sustainability and Management and Safeguarding of Built Heritage, with collaboration in other courses such as Civil Engineering, Architecture, Building Rehabilitation, Energy for Sustainability and, also, Cultural Heritage and Museology.

 

 Member of the ICOMOS Advisory Board – Portugal

 

 (2002-2011) Pro-Rector of the University of Coimbra, with the responsibilities of facilities management, safety and environment.

 

(2004-2011) Member of the coordination team and (2011-2013) curator of the UNESCO’s World Heritage Candidature "University of Coimbra - Alta and Sofia"

 

(2006 and 2010) Member of the Organizing Committee of the "World Heritage of Portuguese Origin" initiatives, including the foundation of the WHPO network.

 

Author of more than one hundred scientific papers and several technical and pedagogical books and videos in the fields of Construction Technology, Non-Structural Rehabilitation and Built Heritage Preservation and Valorisation.

 

Author of several technical reports on the state of conservation, diagnosis and intervention strategies in buildings.

 

Scientific supervisor of PhD thesis in the field of Building Rehabilitation and Sustainable Construction.

 

Coordinator of several applied research projects with emphasis on: (i) "Viseu-Património Project"; (ii) "Report on minimizing the risk of poor quality in rehabilitation projects" (Fundiestamo, 2017); (iii) Project of "Seismic and Fire Risk Assessment in the Ancient Urban Centre of Seixal" (2010); (iv) Research Project "Bases for the Restoration of Historical Coatings of the Historical Centre of Coimbra" (2004-2008); (v) “Urban and Social Rehabilitation Process of Down Town Coimbra” (2003-2006).

 

Co-ordinator and promoter of several collective participation initiatives around the valorisation of the built cultural heritage, especially: (i) Pedagogical worksite of the restoration of the Tower of the University of Coimbra; (ii) "Freeze" Viseu - a day to know and safeguard the built heritage "; (iii) Scientific and Pedagogical workshops in the XIV century fortress of São João Baptista, in Angra do Heroísmo, Azores.
