Teaching Methods

This course is taught balancing theory and lab work, with an emphasis on the analysis and design of solutions for specific problems that involve the use of development and simulation tools.

Pupils will be encouraged to work in groups.

Learning Outcomes

- Understand the overall architecture of monitoring and supervision systems, its components, functions, and features, as well, as its evolution towards the internet of things.

- Understand the fundamental operating principles of cabled and wireless industrial data communication networks.

- Learn to select the data communication networks based on the application requirements.

- Develop the skills to use and specify monitoring and supervision systems.

- Define the security and privacy requirements.

2. Implementation

Elements and organization. Operational architecture description.

3. Project

Success conditions. Project management methodology: conception and specification.

4. Data networks

Basic concepts. Classification. Main components. Layered architecture, protocols, interfaces, and services.

5. Industrial data networks

Classification. Hierarchy. Historical context. Fieldbuses.

6. Wireless industrial data networks

Main advantages and fundamental problems. Classification. Wireless fieldbuses. LPWAN networks.

7. Real-time Ethernet

Basic principles and limitations. Switched Ethernet. Commercial solutions.

8. Industrial Internet of Things

Context and definitions. Applications and challenges. Reference architectures.

9. Security

Context and definitions. Threat and attack classification. Cryptography; Authentication; Key distribution. Secure protocols.
