PhD in Fire Safety Engineering

General Objectives of the Course

The creation of a PhD program in the Fire Safety Engineering, provided by the Faculty of Sciences and Technology of the University of Coimbra in collaboration with the National Laboratory of Civil Engineering (NLCE), aims to provide doctoral students and national, or foreign, a solid institutional framework, methodological and scientific training in advanced fire safety for buildings that can enable them to carry out quality scientific work and integrate them into international networks of knowledge. This PhD program, supporting the above principles, is an advanced training at the highest level following the Master in Urban Fire Safety of the Faculty of Sciences and Technology of the University of Coimbra (FCTUC) done in collaboration with the National Laboratory of Civil Engineering (NLCE). In addition to this collaboration with great meaning, the teachers involved in conducting this doctoral program, have contacts in some of the best universities in the world and a vast experience of joint work and collaboration at the level of participation in courses and conferences. Also with governments and companies directly involved in the sector of fire safety of buildings there is a large transfer experience to know not only the level of development of advanced studies and training, particularly in the field of regulation in the area. The PhD in Fire Safety Engineering has a minimum duration of three years. According to the Rules of PhD at the University of Coimbra, this period may extend up to a maximum of five years. The structure of the PhD is the following:
1st year - two semesters with 30 ECTS each. In the first half are met three compulsory courses, 6 ECTS each, plus two optional courses chosen from two groups of subjects available for the course, 6 ECTS each. In the second half will be served a compulsory course, 30 ECTS (Project of Thesis).
2nd year - Dedicated to the work to dissertation.
3rd year - Dedicated to the work leading to the dissertation and its preparation.
The discipline of Project of Thesis corresponds to the preliminary survey work on the development opportunities that are offered within the subject area developed, which may include conducting small training periods (typically up to one month) in companies or research institutions, national or that can provide a foreign frame of reference for matters which are to be dealt with during the research phase.

Examination Regulations, Assessment and Grading

As assessment is a pedagogical activity inseparable from the teaching process, its aim is to establish the students' competencies and knowledge, their critical sense, ability to recognize and resolve problems, as well as their written and oral presentation skills. Students may only register for exams for classes they are currently registered for under the terms of number 6 of article 4 of the University of Coimbra Pedagogical Policy. The following are examples of assessment items: Oral or written exams, written or practical work, individual and group projects that may require an oral defense, as well as class participation. Assessment for each class may include one or more of the above mentioned items. Grading is based on a scale of 0 to 20 and a grade of 10 is required to pass. Whenever assessment includes more than one item, the final grade is calculated by taking into account the relative weight of each item according to a formula published in the course outline under the terms of number 2 of article 7 of the UC Pedagogical Policy.
