General Objectives of the Course

The aim of undergraduate medical education at the FMUC is to help medical students to acquire a solid and coherent knowledge base associated with the appropriate set of values, attitudes and skills that will enable them to become medical doctors committed to the scientific basis of the art of medicine, the ethical principles and humanitarian approaches that are the foundation of medical practice and to the lifelong improvement of their capabilities to promote the health and well-being of the communities they serve.

Examination Regulations, Assessment and Grading

The regulations regarding the assessment of students are determined by the norms contained in the Regulamento Pedagógico da Universidade de Coimbra and the Regulamento Pedagógico da Faculdade de Medicina da Universidade de Coimbra and further relevant legislation.

Demonstrate: knowledge and skills of basic and clinical sciences in the management of common clinical problems; a comprehensive biopsychosocial approach to assessment and treatment of patients; fundamental knowledge of disease prevention / health promotion; communicate effectively with patients, families, and health professionals; ethical principles in medical practice; professional behavior to personal and interpersonal level, awareness of their own health as well as the potential impact of their behavior on others; effective use of information technologies; self-learning skills; ability to explore research opportunities; skills to teach, honesty and concern for the welfare of patients; commitment to lifelong learning; commitment to continuous improvement of their skills, understanding of problems associated with conflicts of interest; commitment to promoting health and well-being of communities; availability to lead.

Recognition of Prior Learning

Recognition of prior learning is carried out in accordance with the Academic Regulation of the University of Coimbra.

Qualification Requirements and Regulations

DL 74/2006, 24th of March, with subsequent changes introduced by the Order 782/2009, 23rd of July

Graduation Requirements

Requisites for obtaining the qualification: 360 ECTS, including the conclusion of the Estágio Programado e Orientado (Clinical Clerkship) and the Trabalho Final (Final Work) with a Public Dissertation before a Jury.

Access to Further Studies

3rd Cycle of studies in the areas of Medicine/Health Sciences or others.
