Master’s degree in Astrophysics and Instrumentation for Space

General Objectives of the Course

The Master aims to give specialized training in the fields of Astrophysics and Instrumentation for Space to graduates in physics, engineering and related fields, in order to train professionals who can interact or integrate scientific teams on large organizations (eg, ESA, ESO , NASA, etc ...) and technological companies with activities in the space domain. The versatile structure of the Master study’s plan, allows students to choose courses that best fit their profiles and that best complement their previous training, given the opportunity areas that most interest them. Thus, it can focus more on astrophysics, theoretical cosmology, computational modeling and data analysis, or be more focused on instrumentation, navigation and geo-observation. The Master aims to give the tools for the graduate to interact and collaborate in the strongly multidisciplinary context of the current astrophysics and in the in the arena of space activities.

Examination Regulations, Assessment and Grading

As assessment is a pedagogical activity inseparable from the teaching process, its aim is to establish the students' competencies and knowledge, their critical sense, ability to recognize and resolve problems, as well as their written and oral presentation skills. Students may only register for exams for classes they are currently registered for under the terms of number 6 of article 4 of the University of Coimbra Pedagogical Policy. The following are examples of assessment items: Oral or written exams, written or practical work, individual and group projects that may require an oral defense, as well as class participation. Assessment for each class may include one or more of the above mentioned items. Grading is based on a scale of 0 to 20 and a grade of 10 is required to pass. Whenever assessment includes more than one item, the final grade is calculated by taking into account the relative weight of each item according to a formula published in the course outline under the terms of number 2 of article 7 of the UC Pedagogical Policy.

The preparation of summaries of all taught classes allows in every moment to monitor the fulfilment of the programme objectives for each subject course unit. Throughout the course students are encouraged to solve and discuss problems and extract conclusions, either orally or in writing, in order to develop their autonomy and independence. The degree of individual compliance with the proposed objectives is assessed through student assessments, either by written papers or through oral discussions of scientific papers and reports on specific matters, depending of the subject unit. The pursuit of the general objectives of the course is also considered and pondered from the capacity demonstrated by the students when presenting public seminars and from the public discussions of masters theses, including the views expressed by the juries about the quality of these theses.
