Master in Industrial and Management Engineering

General Objectives of the Course

The Industrial and Management Engineering master aims to provide skills to it students in order to prepare them to plan and manage complex systems with strong interactions between human, financial, organizational and technological variables. Therefore, the course intends to provide students with a solid education which is necessary for a successful integration in the labor market. The course also aims to offer an in-depth scientific basis in the field of Industrial and Management Engineering, providing students with the necessary qualifications to pursue higher studies degrees like a PhD. After his course the student should be able to demonstrate skills to: (1) apply current principles of Industrial Engineering to solve complex real-world problems and (2) overcome challenges facing themselves, their organizations and the community.

Admission Requirements

All students with a Bachelor in EGI have the access to the Master in Industrial Engineering and Management guaranteed. Students with other bachelor degrees in engineering or management can also be candidates to the Master in Industrial Engineering and Management.

Candidates should check the admission requirements available on this site, in addition to the information provided here.

Professional Goals

Industrial Engineering and Management academic training is the translation into a degree course of the emerging professional figure of the engineer-manager. This new figure evolved naturally thanks to the needs of the industrialized world. His role is to plan and manage complex systems where there is a strong interaction between technical, economic and organizational variables, with an emphasis on efficiency, productivity and quality. Given his training, the Industrial Engineer can find jobs in industrial and services companies, in consultancy firms and financial institutions, covering a large range of activities, such as: design and managing production and logistics systems, strategic planning, product and services quality assurance and safety of the working spaces, planning and managing technology and innovation, conduct continuous improvement projects and management of companies. A recent survey conducted to previous Industrial Engineers trained at DEM-FCTUC shows that they are employed in services companies, consultancy firms and, mainly, on the industrial sector, being involved in activities related to: production, quality, logistics, maintenance and process improvements.

Examination Regulations, Assessment and Grading

As assessment is a pedagogical activity inseparable from the teaching process, its aim is to establish the students' skills and training, their critical sense, ability to recognize and resolve problems, as well as their written and oral presentation skills. Students may only register for exams for classes they are currently registered for under the terms of number 6 of article 4 of the University of Coimbra Pedagogical Policy. The following are examples of assessment items: Oral or written exams, written or practical work, individual and group projects that may require an oral defense, as well as class participation. Assessment for each class may include one or more of the above mentioned items. Grading is based on a scale of 0 to 20 and a grade of 10 is required to pass. Whenever assessment includes more than one item, the final grade is calculated by taking into account the relative weight of each item according to a formula published in the course outline under the terms of number 2 of article 7 of the UC Pedagogical Policy. The evaluation of the curricular unit “Dissertation/Internship” consists in a public examination before a jury composed by three elements.

Learning Objectives and Intended Skills

The main expected student outcomes during their course are: An ability to apply knowledge of mathematics, science, and industrial engineering; An ability to analyze and interpret data; An ability to design a system or process to meet desired needs within realistic constraints such as economic, environmental, social, ethical, productivity, and sustainability; An ability to function on multi-disciplinary teams; An ability to communicate effectively; A recognition of the need for, and an ability to engage in life-long learning. An ability to design, develop, implement, and improve integrated systems that include people, materials, information, equipment, and energy by using appropriate analytical, computational, and experimental tools acquired during their course.
