General Objectives of the Course
The Ph.D. program aims to train highly qualified professionals, able to play a major role in research, technological development and adaptation, entrepreneurship and leadership in Refining, Petrochemical and Chemical Engineering.
This course comprises a first part of the curriculum, called "doctoral program" and a second part intended for the preparation of a thesis.
This PhD program has a normal duration of three quarters corresponding to the doctoral program, followed by four semesters corresponding to the development of the research project leading to a final dissertation. Its duration may be extended under the regulations of the institution where the doctoral student enrolls for the realization of his final PhD exam.
Learning Objectives and Intended Skills
It is intended that at the end of this cycle of studies, doctoral students develop competencies, skills and research methods in the field of Refining, Petrochemical and Chemical Engineering, namely: -Ability to systematically understand this science and technology; -Ability to conceive, design, adapt and perform scientific research and technological development, subject to the legal requirements and meeting the highest ethical standards and quality, endowed with academic and business integrity; -Ability to conceive, design, adapt and contribute to the production or installation of new products or processes; -Effective capacity to perform original research that contributes to the expansion of the frontiers of knowledge and merit, disclosed in refereed publications; -Ability to review, evaluate and synthesize new and complex ideas; -Ability to communicate with their peers, the academic and business communities, and the society in general over the area in which they specialize; -Ability to, in a knowledge-based society, promote the technological, social and cultural progress, in academic and professional contexts.

Admission Requirements

To enroll in this Doctoral Program, applicants must meet at least one of the alternatives expressed in the following paragraphs:
-Have a Master's degree (second cycle higher education), or an equivalent degree totaling at least 300 credits (ECTS) in Chemical Engineering or in a related scientific field;
-Have a national or foreign qualification deemed, in legal terms, as equivalent;
-Hold a scholarly, scientific or professional curriculum recognized as attesting the capacity to carry out this cycle of studies by the statutorily scientific body of the university where they intend to be admitted.

Recognition of Prior Learning
Recognition of previous studies in this area and of additional competences acquired during the professional experience of the candidates is possible. This is evaluated accordingly to the model in use, resulting from the adaptation of the 3rd cycle courses to the Bologna model.

Examination Regulations, Assessment and Grading
Given the fact that pedagogical assessment is inseparable from teaching, it is intended to ascertain competences and knowledge that students acquired, their critical thinking, their ability to point out and solve problems, as well as their written and oral expression. Students admitted to examination are those who are registered in the curricular units in the academic year in which the exams are carried out and, simultaneously, registered in those examinations, whenever this registration is necessary, in accordance with number 7, article 5 of the Pedagogical Regulation of the University of Coimbra.
The assessment elements are the following examples: written or oral exam, tests, written or practical assignments, as well as individual or group projects that may have to be orally defended and students’ participation in classes. Assessment of each curricular unit may include one or more of the mentioned assessment elements.


The mark obtained by each student in each curricular unit consists of a whole number between 0 and 20 points and students who obtain the minimum final mark of 10 points are successfully assessed.
Whenever assessment of a curricular unit comprises more than one assessment element, the final mark is calculated on the basis of the marks students obtained in each assessment element by means of a formula that is made public in accordance with number 1, article 8 of the Pedagogical Regulation of the University of Coimbra. Teachers should provide the whole supplementary information that is requested by the Pedagogical Council.
The Pedagogical Council of each faculty may suggest changes in the proposed assessment schemes after listening to the opinion of the teachers of the curricular units, taking into account their evaluation of the expected effort per student in each of the assessment elements and other aspects they may deem relevant
Graduation Requirements

The candidates need to complete the curricular part (first part of the program), according to the study plan described in the Regulation n.º 3905/2010 of March 3rd 2010, and obtain approval in the public discussion of the Thesis presented. The candidates that complete these requirements are given the title of Doctor in “Refining, Petrochemical and Chemical Engineering”, by the Universities associated in this program.
