Masters’ Degree in Adult Education and Training and Community Intervention

General Objectives of the Course

This SC aims to prepare professionals with solid training in the field of Adult Education and Training and Community Intervention, recognized by the entities and instances with responsibility in the field, and ensure that at the end of this SC Master's students are able to:
- Develop all activities related to the processes of adult educational mediation and community education in a perspective of permanent education and/or lifelong education;
- Participate in the administration and management of adult education and training systems and organizations, at central, regional, local and organizational levels;
- Mediate processes of balancing competences and promoting the recognition, validation and certification of prior learning;
- Design and monitor scientific research projects in the field of adult education and training and community intervention.

Admission Requirements

Candidates to the master’s degree may be:
a) holders of a Bachelor’s degree or legal equivalent;
b) holders of a foreign higher academic degree, that was awarded after accomplishing a 1st cycle of studies, which should be structured according to the principles of the Bologna Process in an adhering country to this Process;
c) holders of a foreign higher academic degree that is recognized to meet the objectives of the Bachelor’s degree by the legal competent Scientific Council of the Higher Education Institution to which they want to be admitted.
d) holders of an academic, scientific or professional curriculum, which is recognized as attesting the capacity to accomplish this cycle of studies by the legal competent Scientific Council of the Higher Education Institution to which they want to be admitted.

Professional Goals

Adult education and training activities: trainer, animator, mediator and agent of individual and collective transformation processes, in spaces of different professional activities:
-NGOs, PSSIs and the like: Education for citizenship, community education, health education, environmental education, groups at risk of exclusion, equal opportunities, education for peace and democracy, education for consumption, artistic education, aesthetics and heritage, education in retirement, cultural diversity, and local, social and economic development;
-Companies and centers for raising formal education, qualification and continuous training - EAT and YET, professional training, training accreditation and management, training of trainers, training in companies;
-Validation of prior learning and skills - QC;
-Sociocultural animation - in municipalities, groups, clubs and cultural and sports associations.
-Educational Gerontology - Senior Universities, RSFE and Nursing Centers.

Mode of Study

The course is delivered in full time or part time attendance and daytime schedule.

Examination Regulations, Assessment and Grading

As assessment is a pedagogical activity inseparable from the teaching process, its aim is to establish the students' competencies and knowledge, their critical sense, ability to recognize and resolve problems, as well as their written and oral presentation skills. Students may only register for exams for classes they are currently registered for under the terms of number 6 of article 4 of the University of Coimbra Pedagogical Policy. The following are examples of assessment items: Oral or written exams, written or practical work, individual and group projects that may require an oral defense, as well as class participation. Assessment for each class may include one or more of the above mentioned items. Grading is based on a scale of 0 to 20 and a grade of 10 is required to pass. Whenever the grade comprises more than one item, the final grade is calculated by taking into account the relative weight of each item according a formula published in the course outline under the terms of number 2 of article 7 of the UC Pedagogical Policy.

Learning Objectives and Intended Skills

Conceive, plan, develop and evaluate education and training programs and actions, formal or non-formal, from an intersectional perspective, that better serve the needs of adult people and their communities and contexts;
Understand and analyze, rigorously, the individual and contextual characteristics and the conditions of action of adult people and their communities, in order to foster educational mediation and individual and community transformation;
Manage adult education and training projects and programs and community intervention;
Plan, develop and evaluate community education and socio-cultural activities;
Mediate competence balancing processes and promote the recognition, validation and certification of prior learning and skills;
Develop training activities within the Qualifica Centers and in initial and continuing professional training courses;
Design research projects from an intersectional perspective.

Recognition of Prior Learning

The University of Coimbra, through its organic teaching units, credits previous training or professional experience, with a view to continuing studies to obtain an academic degree or diploma, in accordance with the Academic Regulations of the University, published in Diário da República, 2nd series, on September 24th, 2020, Chapter XVIII "Other Rights Arising from a Situation or Special Condition" and Part VIII "Credits".

Qualification Requirements and Regulations

The legal framework for the qualification is established by Decree Law no.74/2006, 24th March, amended and republished by DL no. 107/2008, 25th June; Ordinance no.782/2009, 23rd July.

Graduation Requirements

The Master’s Degree in Adult Education and Training and Community Intervention comprises a vocational track, which is manifested by the accomplishment of an internship and a report on it, and a scientific track which implies the accomplishment of a research work and its dissertation.
Attendance to this Master’s course with a successful assessment in the whole curricular units of the first year will allow students to obtain a Post Graduate Degree certificate in Adult Education and Training and Community Intervention.

Access to Further Studies

After obtaining this Master's Degree it is possible to proceed to the third cycle of studies (PhD).
