General Objectives of the Course
The holder of the Master’s Degree in Adult Education and Training and Community Intervention should be able to:
§ design, plan, develop and evaluate educational programs and procedures, formal or not formal, that best meet the needs of adults and the communities and contexts in which they interact.
§ characterize, describe and understand educational events occurring in any context, with any adult, considered either in group or individually, helping to build knowledge and innovation in this scientific field.
§ develop all the activities regarding educational mediation processes of adults, under the perspective of lifelong learning.
§ understand and analyze rigorously, individual and contextual characteristics and the action conditions of adults and their communities in order to enliven processes of individual and collective transformation.
§ be responsible for management of educational projects and programs of adults training and local development.
§ plan, develop and evaluate activities of socio-cultural entertainment and community education.
§ take part in the administration and management of adults educational and training systems and organisations at the central, regional, local and organisational level.
§ mediate processes of competences balance and promotion of the Recognition, Validation
and Certification of knowledge and Competences
§ develop vocational trainer’s activities in different fields of training and educational courses for adults, in complimentary training courses planned in CNO’s (New Opportunities learning Centres) activities, in training and educational courses for youth and in the several initial and continuous courses of vocational training.
§ promote autonomy of adults learning, in different contexts of life.
Curricular units of the study plan in the Master’s Degree in Adult Education and Training and Community Intervention are distributed as follows:
1st year of this Master’s Degree (60 ECTS, each curricular unit corresponds to 6 ECTS):
a) 6 compulsory curricular units (each with 6 ECTS). Two of these curricular units, one in each semester, include scientific project methodologies; other two curricular units are related to the theoretical framework of adults’ education and training and to intervention possibilities with adults of different age groups based on that framework; the remaining two curricular units concern adult and elderly people’s psychology.
b) 4 elective curricular units (each with 6 ECTS)
2nd year of this Master’s Degree:
a) In the 2nd year of this Master’s Degree there will be either the development of a research work and the writing of a dissertation resulting from that research or the accomplishment of a professional internship and the elaboration of a report on it, which should be subject to subsequent discussion and approval under course’s regulation.
The choice made by the Master’s student for one or other modality of the Adult Education and Training and Community Intervention Master’s Course and its successful accomplishment corresponds to a total of 50 ECTS.
b) In the 2nd year of this Master’s Degree, the student should also attend to a Mentoring and Follow Up Seminar of the Internship, which makes a total of 10 ECTS.
Course duration: 2 years.
Mode of Study
The course is delivered in full time or part time attendance and daytime schedule.
Access to Further Studies
After obtaining this Master's Degree it is possible to proceed to the third cycle of studies (PhD).
Admission Requirements

Candidates to the master’s degree may be:
a) holders of a Bachelor’s degree or legal equivalent;
b) holders of a foreign higher academic degree, that was awarded after accomplishing a 1st cycle of studies, which should be structured according to the principles of the Bologna Process in an adhering country to this Process;
c) holders of a foreign higher academic degree that is recognized to meet the objectives of the Bachelor’s degree by the legal competent Scientific Council of the Higher Education Institution to which they want to be admitted.
d) holders of an academic, scientific or professional curriculum, which is recognized as attesting the capacity to accomplish this cycle of studies by the legal competent Scientific Council of the Higher Education Institution to which they want to be admitted.

Recognition of Prior Learning
The provisions of article 45 in the Decree Law no. 74/2006, 24th March, with the words of Decree Law no.107/2008, 25th June shall apply.
Qualification Requirements and Regulations
The legal framework for the qualification is established by Decree Law no.74/2006, 24th March, amended and republished by DL no. 107/2008, 25th June; Ordinance no.782/2009, 23rd July.
Professional Goals
Both European Union and Portugal, by means of different legislation that are the political framework of adults’ education and training, have taken charge of this specificity, legislating towards the need to build a specific professional identity in every profile related to activities of adult’s education and training, particularly for the duties of vocational trainer, socio-cultural entertainer, mediator and agent of individual and collective transformation processes, involving adults in fields of professional activities that may include:
- Education for Citizenship; local development and community education; education for health; environmental education; groups of people at risk of exclusion; equality of opportunity; education for peace and democracy; consumer education; art, aesthetic and patrimony education; leisure education; economic, social and cultural development.
- Socio-cultural entertainment – local administration; sport and cultural groups, clubs and associations.
- Enhancing school and qualification levels and increasing the offer of continuous vocational training - EFA (Adults Education and Training) and EFJ (Youth Training and Education), vocational training, training accreditation and management, Vocational Trainers Training, Training in Enterprises.
- Validation of competences and acquired knowledge – CNO (New Opportunities learning Centres).
- Portuguese Universities for Seniors.
- Geronto-pedagogics – Nursing Homes and Adult Day Care Centres.
Examination Regulations, Assessment and Grading
As assessment is a pedagogical activity inseparable from the teaching process, its aim is to establish the students' competencies and knowledge, their critical sense, ability to recognize and resolve problems, as well as their written and oral presentation skills. Students may only register for exams for classes they are currently registered for under the terms of number 6 of article 4 of the University of Coimbra Pedagogical Policy. The following are examples of assessment items: Oral or written exams, written or practical work, individual and group projects that may require an oral defense, as well as class participation. Assessment for each class may include one or more of the above mentioned items. Grading is based on a scale of 0 to 20 and a grade of 10 is required to pass. Whenever assessment includes more than one item, the final grade is calculated by taking into account the relative weight of each item according to a formula published in the course outline under the terms of number 2 of article 7 of the UC Pedagogical Policy.
Graduation Requirements

The Master’s Degree in Adult Education and Training and Community Intervention comprises a vocational track, which is manifested by the accomplishment of an internship and a report on it, and a scientific track which implies the accomplishment of a research work and its dissertation.
Attendance to this Master’s course with a successful assessment in the whole curricular units of the first year will allow students to obtain a Post Graduate Degree certificate in Adult Education and Training and Community Intervention.
