Erasmus Mundus Joint Master in Planetary Geosciences

Entidades parceiras: Université de Nantes, Università degli studi G.DAnnunzio di Chieti

General Objectives of the Course

The EMJM in Planetary Geosciences addresses the need for structuring and internationalising the teaching and training in this field in the European Higher Education Area(EHEA) strengthening excellence, increasing cooperation between universities and with industry and training young students to respond to the future challenges of spaceexploration in a fully multidisciplinary environment.
The student will receive a solid education in the different fields required for the participation in a space exploration mission, ranging from the planning, preparation, design, implementation and management.
At the same time, he/she is expected to become familiar with a number of tools in data analysis as image acquisition and processing, analysis and the writing and presentationof scientific papers and proposals in order to analyse the data acquired during a space exploration mission. The student may also contact directly the space industry andprivate companies developing space instrumentation.

Admission Requirements

- The candidate must hold a Bachelor (or equivalent) degree in one of the fields of earth science, physics, astrophysics, geology, engineering or mathematics.
- He/she must have achieved a minimum level of English of B2, equivalent to the International English Language Testing System (IELTS) (between 5 and 6.5, with a minimum of 5.0 in all four components) or an equivalent qualification obtained through a ‘secure English language test’ which is valid at time of registration.
- For Native English speakers, the language certificate shall not be mandatory.

Candidates should check the admission requirements available on this site, in addition to the information provided here.

Professional Goals

Qualified researchers and professionals capable of integrating research and development teams, namely in space agencies, universities, research centers and technological companies with activities in the space sector or in adjacent economic sectors, impacted by the planetary context.

Examination Regulations, Assessment and Grading

Assessment methods (exams, partials, problem solving, synthesis work, fieldwork, etc) are specific to each course unit module. The assessment grade given to each unit module is issued by the host institution, according to the criteria, regulations and procedures that are in effect at that institution. Retake
exams for taught modules will be allowed and supervised according to the regulations of the host institution. A student who does not pass a course unit module has the right to one retake session right after the semester or during the following semester issued by the concerned institution. In the latter case the exam is made under the supervision of a local teacher or the internship supervisor. If the student does not pass after all these attempts then the situation will be reviewed by the Joint EMJM Program Management Committee. In the worst case scenario, the student may be informed that she/he does not meet the conditions to
obtain the degree and must leave the Erasmus+ programme.

Learning Objectives and Intended Skills

To train qualified professionals to work in the space exploration, including in research and development centers and in technological companies committed to spaceexploration, from planning and definition of missions to the implementation and monitoring of services provided by the space industry. Students shall develop:
- A solid training in Planetary Geosciences.
- Skills that allow them to engage in a continuous and autonomous learning process throughout active life, in planetary surfaces and interiors, remote sensing, data analysis, the simulation and modelling of related processes and systems.
- The ability to intervene at the level of innovation in the field of Planetary Geosciences, solving problems in new situations, in broad and multidisciplinary contexts.
- The ability to work in international teams, providing students with skills that allow them to assume responsibilities in the planning, implementation and management of taskswithin international space exploration programs.

Recognition of Prior Learning

Applications will be processed by the Selection Committee (SC) composed of senior academic representatives from each Partner Institution. The SC will evaluate applications and an interview. Previous academic path and professional experience is valued against the relevance, academic excellence and suitability to the course.

Qualification Requirements and Regulations

Decree-Law No. 74/2006, of March 24, in the current wording

Graduation Requirements

The Student must pass all the core modules at each Host Institution and
must validate 30 ECTS credits for each semester. At the end of the four semesters, the Student must have obtained 120 ECTS, from which 30 ECTS from the final dissertation.
Students who fail their assessments or exams for taught modules will be permitted to resit their assessment/exam in accordance with the regulations of the relevant host institution. If the student fails to meet the assessment requirements for a module, including any resit attempts permitted by the host institution, the situation will be analyzed by the Joint Programme Management Committee of the EMJM. If no solution has been found, in the worst case, he/she will be informed that they have not satisfied the conditions for an award and must leave the programme.
