Paul David Hardman is a communication designer, illustrator, author and researcher. He has a bachelors degree in Graphic Arts from Liverpool Art School (JMU), an MA in Graphic Design from Camberwell College of Arts (UAL), and a Ph.D in Contemporary Art from the University of Coimbra, where he has taught on the Design and Multimedia course since 2013. His academic work includes publications in the areas of design pedagogy, which was the theme of his doctoral thesis; and in contemporary typography, illustration, and design practice. Key publications include the paper: Framing Design Education within the Contemporary Paradigm (2017), which considers the ways in which design pedagogy must adapt to current challenges and opportunities; Navigator, Tour Guide, or Travel Companion: The Role of the Teacher in the Territory of the Crit (2018), which highlights problems in the presentation of student design projects and proposes a methodology for encouraging peer dialogue; and The Transformative Potential of the Ongoing Digital Revolution for the Studio Model of Design Education (2022), which discusses hybrid pedagogy. Ongoing research explores the relation of design practice to the development of the urban environment.
His professional design activities are conducted under the name Studio And Paul, which include many projects in cultural fields, such as the visual identities for Criatek: Festival of Creativity and Digital Technology; Linha de Fuga: Festival of Performing Arts; and the theatre company Teatrão, who he has worked with since 2016, designing the company’s visual identity and the images for all of its original productions. He has also created several visual identities for CES, including COMBAT – Combating racism in Portugal: an analysis of public policies and anti-discrimination legislation; SUGERE – Sustainability and Wise Use of Geological Resources; and TROPO – Anthropocenic Ontologies in Portugal: social movements, public policies and emerging technologies. His illustration practice includes the books Palavras Viageiras (Xerefé, 2016) and O Pequeno País dos Frutos (Leya, 2019) by João Pedro Mésseder and he authored the children’s book, A Almoçarada do Billy Bolly, which published by Xerefé in 2016.
Graphic works have been exhibited internationally, for example in the London Anti-Design Festival (2010), Kemistry Gallery (2012) and the Pigeon Wing (2013), London; Ficciones Typografika, Minneapolis (2015); Cheap: street art poster festival, Bologna (2017); the Trnava Poster Triennial (2018); the Golden Bee 13 Global Graphic Design Biennale in Moscow (2018), TPAM International festival of theatrical posters, Yerevan (2022) and featured in several books and publications such as Whatever Next: A Discourse on Typography (2010) and Slanted Magazine #40 — Experimental Type (2022). He has had solo exhibitions in Casa das Artes, Casa da Esquina and Teatro da Cerca São Bernardo in Coimbra and Biblioteca Municipal Sever do Vouga. He co-founded Clube dos Tipos in 2013 to teach workshops in Letterpress and typography, he was a designer at Teatro Nacional São João, Porto; English Touring Opera, HOK, Urban Initiatives and Camberwell Press (co-founder) in London; and Mocha Productions in Liverpool (directors Dylan Southern and Will Lovelace, now 32 films).
