  • Project Title: Perception and Production of Clitics
  • NSF Award Number: 1729256.
  • Status: Ongoing.
  • Principal Investigator: Alice Harris (University of Massachusetts Amherst).
  • Co-Principal Investigator: Arthur Samuel (University of Massachusetts Amherst).
  • Invited Principal Investigator (subrecipient): Ana R. Luís (University of Coimbra).

General goal: Understand how complex words are processed and understand the processing of affixes in different positions (i.e. prefixes and suffixes) as well as the processing of clitics in different positions (before the host, after the host, inside the host). Understanding the perception of clitics is an essential part of specifying how complex words are recognized.  


2 - Funding Agency: EU 

COST ACTION IC16105

  • Title: Network for Combining Language Learning with Crowdsourcing Techniques
  • Funding: EU (124 million Euro/2016), through competitive application of subject proposal and membership.
  • Status: Ongoing 
  • Role: Portuguese Substitute Delegate 

Aims: This Action is concerned with the domain of Language Learning and focuses on enhancing the production of learning material in order to cope with the increasing demand for language learning and the striking diversification of learner profiles.

  • Title: Structure, emergence and evolution of pidgin and creole languages II

  • Status: Ongoing.

4- CELGA-ILTEC funded projects for the development of linguistic resources/corpora

Online archive of 17th century Vilancicos de Negro 

Coordinator: Ana R. Luís (U. Coimbra/CELGA)

  • Co-coordinator:  Paulo Estudante (U. Coimbra)
  • Status:  29 manuscripts have been digitalized, uploaded onto the database and transcribed (See Annex 21, for selection of manuscripts). Research assistant: Fernando Duarte.
  • Next Stage: Annotation of the corpus to create a searchable database with  all attested 17th Vilancicos de Negro. 


5- CELGA-ILTEC funded projects for the development of linguistic resources/corpora

Transcription and annotation of Spoken Corpus of Guiné Bissau Creole 

Coordinator:  Ana R. Luís (U. Coimbra/CELGA)

  • Co-coordinator:  Jean Louis Rougé & Emmanuel Schang (U. Orléans)
  • Research Assistant: José Augusto Barbosa (Ph.D. Student, native speaker of Kriyol)
  • Goals:  transcription and annotation of 25 hours of spoken Kriyol

  • Title : The inflectional structure of Portuguese and Portuguese-based creoles: combining empirical, theoretical and quantitative perspectives.
  • Status: Complete (2012-2014).
  • Principal Investigator: Ana R. Luís, University of Coimbra(Portuguese Team)/Centro de Estudos de Linguística Geral e Aplicada.
  • Principal Investigator: Olivier Bonami, Université Paris-Sorbonne (French Team)/Laboratoire de Linguistique Formelle.General goals:

The research aims was to characterise the inflectional patterns of European Portuguese by applying quantitative, formal and computational methods of the kind that have been previously developed for other morphological systems. The project extended the methodology to creole languages and develops comparative analyses.

COST ACTION IC1207 (2013-2017)

  • Title: Portuguese Delegate of ‘PARSEME: Parsing and multi-word expressions’ 
  • Funding: EU (56 million Euro/2012), through competitive application of subject proposal and membership.
  • Status: Completed.
  • Role: Portuguese Delegate.

Aims: This Action was an interdisciplinary scientific network devoted to the role of multi-word expressions in parsing.
