Recommended Prerequisites

Students must have a strong background in mechanical behavior and strength of materials and structural analysis. Students must already know the basic formulations for the analysis and design of structural steel elements and joints according to European rules, including Eurocode 3, Parts 1.1 and 1.8.

Teaching Methods

Classes run under theoretical and practical. In the classes are presented the theoretical concepts and the code formulations for the design of steel and steel-concrete composite structures. Simultaneously, some illustrative examples are solved. Students have an active participation throughout the training process, because they have to develop full project works; part of this work is developed in classes and some outside of classes.

Learning Outcomes

Transmit the knowledge necessary for the conception, analysis and design of steel structures or composite steel-concrete structures, according to European regulations for structural design, including Eurocode 3 and Eurocode 4. In this course unit, emphasis is also given to the execution stage, once only a deep knowledge of manufacturing, transportation and erection processes allows to the designer the conception of more efficient structures and therefore more economic structures. Another objective of this course unit is to encourage students to use automatic calculation tools.

Syllabus

1. General concepts of design of steel and steel-concrete composite structures and regulation.
2. Bases of design.
3. Design and structural modeling: industrial structures; residential buildings; commercial and service buildings; car parks and bridges.
4. Global analysis of steel structures: global elastic analysis and plastic global analysis, first-order analysis and second-order analysis, structural stability; imperfections; behavior of joints; classification of cross-sections.
5. Analysis and design of steel structures with slender sections.
6. Corrosion and protection techniques.
7. Fire design of steel and composite structures.
8. Conception, analysis and design of steel-concrete composite structures: shear connection; composite beams, composite slabs, composite columns and composite joints.
9. Execution and quality management in steel structures.
10. Study visit.
