Teaching Methods

The method includes components of synthesis lectures and research seminar.

Most of the time will be occupied with the discussion of the texts and analysis of the philosophical issues they raise.

Learning Outcomes

Course aims:

a) To introduce an understanding of central ideas in Plato .

b) To develop an understanding of core conceptions in Aristotle .

c) to develop an understanding of the historical context of Classical Thought.

By the end of the course, the students will be able to demonstrate intellectual, transferable and practical skills appropriate to this academic level and in particular will be able to demonstrate:

    a) An understanding of some of the main ideas found in Plato and Aristotle.

    b) An understanding of their historical context and especially the way that authors prior to Plato influenced them.

    c) The ability to articulate philosophical problems as they arise in Plato’s and Aristotle’s works, and to evaluate the positions taken by the ancient thinkers on these problems.

Syllabus

This course will provide an introduction to the history of philosophy and to philosophical thinking in general. Most time will be spent on the core theories of Plato and Aristotle, but we shall also cover a selection from the following figures and movements: the 'Pre-Socratic' philosophers; the 'sophists'; Socrates; Epicurus; the Stoics. Topics discussed will include a wide range of philosophical issues.
