Teaching Methods

Expositive and interrogative method, large group discussion, use of audio-visuals for the projection of diagrams with topics of the contents taught.

Role-play and simulation exercises to develop assessment and intervention skills. It is also proposed to conduct researches, in small groups, which are presented and discussed in class.

Ocassionnaly videtapes are presented and discussed about a theme that was taught.

Learning Outcomes

The course has as general objectives, to make a brief introduction to nosology, followed by the presentation of several clinical conditions of the most prevalent and that were not addressed in the course of Psychopathology I (1st semester).

The following specific objectives are defined:

1. To acquire knowledge and develop critical thought about the nosologie of abnormal behavior and mental disorder.

2. To know and to reflect critically about the main systems of diagnostic classification.

3. To acquire knowledge on identification, characterization, diagnose and assessment of the most common mental disorders.

Syllabus

1. The study and the classification of abnormal behavior and mental disorder.

2. The main systems of diagnostic classification.

2.1. The Manual of Diagnosis and Statistics of Mental Disorders;

2.2. The ICD-10 Classification of Mental and Behavioral Disorders.

3. Introduction to psychopathological disorders: clinical description, classification, diagnosis, epidemiology, comorbidity, differential diagnosis, etiology and general notions of treatment; presentation and discussion of clinical cases.

3.1. Anxiety disorders (e.g. panic disorder, agoraphobia, social phobia, specific phobias, obsessive-compulsive disorder, generalized anxiety disorder)

3.2. Mood disorders (e.g. depression)

3.3. Eating disorders (e.g. anorexia and bulimia)

3.4. Substance-related disorders (e.g. alcoholism)
