General Objectives of the Course

The objectives of the IMAE are to foster interdisciplinary training at
a high academic level, within an extensively international context to form graduates with wide portfolios of conceptual and practical skills. The goal of IMAE is to train specialists to carry out a variety of environmental
projects all over the world and is designed to attract students world-wide. To help them develop a global perspective, the partners provide an international network that involves multiple countries, including a newly industrialized country and a developing country. The associated and partner institutions have complementary
disciplinary foci and competences in the field of applied ecology, which will guarantee the success of the graduates by providing them with a large and comprehensive background of understanding, knowledge and skills.

Admission Requirements

a) Holders of a Bachelor degree in Biology (or related areas) or legal equivalent;
b) Holders of a foreign higher academic degree in Biology (or related areas) conferred following a 1st
cycle of studies, organized according to the principles of the Bologna Process by a State adhering to this
Process;
c) Holders of a foreign higher academic degree in Biology (or related areas) that is recognized as
satisfying the objectives of the Bachelor degree by the CC responsible for this cycle of Master studies;
d) In duly justified cases, candidates who present a scientific and / or professional curriculum relevant
to the frequency of this cycle of studies and who, as such, are recognized by the CC responsible for this
Master studies.
e) Have English proficiency certified internationally by the IELTS system (minimum of 6.5) or
equivalent (TOEFL ibt 92, pbt 580). This criterion does not apply to English native speaking countries

Professional Goals

After attending the IMAE, students will be able to follow two different professional
orientations:
- Continuing their scientific and academic progression by joining a PhD Program;
- To move to the professional sector working as specialized technicians in Applied Ecology, being able to develop and coordinate projects in the areas of Biological Sciences, Environmental Sciences and other related areas.

Examination Regulations, Assessment and Grading

For individual curriculum elements (curricular units, MSc thesis) the local education and examination regulations apply. Examinations take place at
the HEI where the curricular units are offered. Re-examinations can take place at any HEI according those exam regulations of the HEI responsible for the provision of the module. The nature of the examinations for each curricular unit is described separately in the module sheet. Each HEI will use their own grading system but the
grades will be converted according to a mutually agreed scheme and those grades will be mutually recognized.
The MSc thesis examination takes place at the HEI under whose supervision the research work was carried out according local regulations, with its assessment being done also according to local regulations. Grades obtained
under a mobility agreement (curricular units and MSc thesis done at the partner universities) will be credited at UC and CAU.

Learning Objectives and Intended Skills

At the end of the two-year programme, the students will:
i) Acquire skills, assess and apply complex management concepts in order to solve today's and tomorrow's environmental challenges;
ii) Gain knowledge in natural and environmental sciences and their practical application;
iii) Gain knowledge of methods in system analysis, modelling, geographic information systems (GIS) and data management;
iv) Train the use of bio-indicators and bio-monitoring approaches to assess environmental quality;
v) Acquire skills on advanced data management and interpretation from environmental quality assessment studies;
vi) Learn how to conceptualize adaptive management, including economic and social aspects and
vii) Develop collaboration skills by working in international and interdisciplinary teams.
Students in the IMAE are trained for the scientifically rigorous application of ecological principles, to work in or lead interdisciplinary teams, to propose new solutions using ecological methods, and to acquire key competences
in the area of applied ecology.

Recognition of Prior Learning

Recognition of prior learning is carried out in accordance with the Academic Regulation of the University of Coimbra.

Qualification Requirements and Regulations

Decree-Law No 74/2006, of 24 March, in its current wording.

Graduation Requirements

Obtaining a Master's Degree in Applied Ecology in this joint degree can
only occur when students meet the following requirements:
a) Have, in the first year of the study cycle, attended and obtained approval in curricular units
comprising 60 ECTS at UC and CAU as described in the study plan;
b) Have, in the 2nd year of the study cycle, attended and obtained approval in curricular units
comprising 30 ECTS in any of the universities involved in the study cycle (including partner universities) as
described in the study plan;
c) Have, in the 2nd year of the study cycle, developed work leading to a Master's Dissertation (30
ECTS), and have been approved in it in any of the universities involved in the cycle of studies (including
partner universities) as described in the study plan.

Access to Further Studies

The study cycle will give the students the necessary qualifications to engage
any PhD Program (3rd cycle) in Biological Sciences, Environmental Sciences and other related areas.
