General Objectives of the Course

The Advanced Master in Architecture, Landscape and Archaeology (ALA) is a trans-disciplinary education programme specialising in the enhancement of archaeological areas, jointly offered by four European universities. It addresses the necessity of creating a shared language between architecture and archaeology in order to achieve a better coordination among the two disciplines, especially in light of recent directives of international bodies that deal with conservation of historical legacies, encouraging interaction between the two professions and a better integration between preservation strategies, planning and contemporary interventions.
The master is directed to architects and archaeologists and has as its object the study of historic landscapes and their integration in metropolitan areas or regions. The purpose of this Joint Master Degree is the specialization of graduates, deriving from the disciplines of archeology and architecture to deal - in cooperation - with issues related to the documentation, identification, evaluation, interpretation and design interventions of archaeological and historically dotted areas, sites and their surroundings within their broad urban framework.

Admission Requirements

The Candidates should have a diploma on II cycle degree in Architecture, Archaeology, Conservation Science, Cultural Heritage Studies or related studies, with 300 ECTS, cycles with 4+1 and 3+2)

The Candidates have to meet the VISA requirements for the three countries involved in the mobility (Italy, Greece and Portugal) and to upload the following documents:

– Proof of nationality (passport)
– Copy of the University diploma
– Copy of transcript of study results (in English)
– Curriculum vitae (EUROPASS) 

– Motivation letter (1xA4 page)
– Letter of recommendation by two academic referees
– For Architects, Portfolio, and for others, PDF of their bachelor/master thesis
– Scanned copy of TOEFL Language Proficiency Certificate 79 [iBT] or of IELTS Certificate (minimum overall band score =6) or Cambridge Advanced Certificate

– Declaration signed by the candidate that the eligibility criteria for a EM scholarship described in the SCHOLARSHIP section of the ALA website have been fulfilled

Professional Goals

Project designer at heritage intervention offices in Archaeology or Architecture.
Technical support in heritage dealing contractor companies.
Architect or archaeologist in public or private archaeologic sites.
Architect or archaeologist in municipal and institutional government bodies, and in offices related to management, programing and planning of architectural and archaeologic heritage.
Technical support in archaeology for museology and museography.

Examination Regulations, Assessment and Grading

Student’s accomplishments are going to be evaluated during the semester. The evaluation of Master Dissertation/Project shall be done in front of a panel of professors (jury).
Students should successfully pass examinations or academic projects to complete each of the Master units; the form of examination for each unit is going to be specified in its descriptio. The grades are going to be given according the grading system of the hosting university.

Learning Objectives and Intended Skills

Students will get interdisciplinary knowledge in the areas of Architecture and Archaeology, through courses in history, theory, drawing, legislation and project design, combining historical knowledge with contemporary problems. This knowledge is achieved through a reflexive practice. This knowledge will allow to inform better interventions in the context of the world Unesco Recommendation on “Historic Urban Landscapes”. This general knowledge will be complemented by specific knowledge on documentation and archive techniques, archaeological site interpretation (from an urban, natural and archaeologic point of view), methodological reflections about how to intervene on “historic urban landscapes”, archaeological sites management, and the general legal framework about architectural, archaeologic and landscape heritage. Students will develop transverse competencies to support the critical thinking, technical skills in Archaeology and Architecture to improve and innovate in heritage interventions, and to articulate heritage with urban as well as rural areas of insertion. These skills and competences aim to improve everyday life of populations and to construct a shared language between Architects and Archaeologists through inter-disciplinary team work.

Recognition of Prior Learning

When requested by the student, the possibility of crediting relevant prior learnig (profesional or academic) will be assessed according to the Accreditation Rules of Previous Training and Work Experience of the University of Coimbra and the partner institutions.

Qualification Requirements and Regulations

The Master degree is obtained in accordance with Portuguese Decree-Law No 74/2006, of 24 March, in its current wording, de Greek Law 4485/17, and the italian one, Legge della Repubblica Italiana - 240/2010

Graduation Requirements

To obtain the Master's degree, the student must obtain approval in all mandatory and optional curricular units of the course, totaling 76 ECTS. The student should also have the approval in Professional Practice Experience, 14 ECTS, and in the Dissertation or Project (30 ECTS).

Access to Further Studies

The master may give acces to a PhD Course in Architecture and/or in Archaeology.
