Doctoral Programme in Health Sciences

General Objectives of the Course

This Programme constitutes a privileged form of promoting and consolidating a strategy that stimulates the development of interdisciplinary projects, taking advantage of the human and technological resources already available at the institutes that support the Programme. In the context of the PhD thesis research work, through the development of projects integrating in a comprehensive manner diverse and complementary techniques and approaches, from biological mechanisms to the pathophysiology of human diseases, the student would act as the catalyser of such synergies, bringing together themes and interests of basic and clinical research. To accomplish this objective it is vital to create an environment that stimulates and fosters an effective and fruitful dialogue between basic researchers and clinicians. Creating scientists-clinicians conscious of the importance of such transversal and integrative approach is fundamental for the long-term success of this strategy. In line with this idea, the main aim of the current proposal is to create training opportunities for the most talented students in Biomedical areas of research, promoting synergies and maximizing the resources already existing in the institutions. The curriculum is designed to allow greater flexibility while providing training in necessary basic skills in science and biomedical research practice.

Examination Regulations, Assessment and Grading

The evaluation criteria in each Course will be established, in advance, by the Course Coordinator, making it available to the students. The evaluation will use a 0-20 range, in which grades higher than 9 are required to be approved in the Course. The evaluation can be either continuously or based in a final exam. Typically, the final grade takes into account various aspects, such scientific paper presentation and discussion, written tests and presentation and discussion of Grant proposals.

Learning Objectives and Intended Skills

In strategic and scientific terms, the student should be capable of identifying the current major strategic technologic and scientific research fields, and high impact socioeconomic topics, in the scope of health sciences. In technical and methodological terms, the students should acquire competences that will allow them to choose and integrate the tools and experimental approaches that best respond to the raised scientific questions, in an adequate, coherent and critical manner. Therefore, the students should be able to identify a current and relevant scientific question, and elaborate an integrated and multidisciplinary scientific research project that is competitive according to the most demanding scientific quality standards. In the course of their doctoral thesis work, students should be capable of developing, in and autonomous and independent manner, a set of research techniques that allow them to test, in an adequate, clear and objective manner, their study hypothesis.
