General Objectives of the Course

This PhD Course in SW aims to develop the skills of critical analysis of problems, policies and social practices, allowing the social/economic development of the country, as well as enhancing the production of scientific knowledge in any of the intervention fields of S. Work and S. Policy. So the goals of the course are to contribute:
a) To promote critical reflection on the research in the field of S.Work and to foster the development of scientific analysis of the social, political and professional issues underlying their field of intervention;
b) To the development/consolidation of scient. research in S.Work, to the scientific progress and social relevance of the associated HEI, namely by promoting scient. research networks, and researches appropriate to the needs of communities and to excellence requirements.
c) To the training of highly specialized personnel with profound skills in terms of design, implementation and evaluation of intervention methodologies/processes and of s. policies.

Admission Requirements

a) Holders of a Master Degree, or equivalent, in Social Work or in a related field;
b) Holders of a Degree in Social Work or related field with an academic, scientific or professional curriculum recognized as attesting the capacity to carry out this cycle of studies by the legal and statutory scientific entities of the associated universities, after the approval of the Scientific and Coordinating Committee of the PhD Program;
c) Exceptionally, holders of an academic, scientific or professional curriculum recognized as attesting the capacity to carry out this study cycle by the legal and statutory scientific entities of the associated universities, depending on the opinion of the Scientific and Coordinating Committee of the PhD Program (article no. 30 of Decree-Law 74/2006, 24th of March in its current wording.

Professional Goals

The holders of a PhD in Social Work may have access, with preference, to the academic career, to scientific research, direction and coordination positions, planning and evaluation of public and social policies in public or private organizations.

Examination Regulations, Assessment and Grading

The final grade, in compliance with article 36, Decree-Law 74/2006, 24th of March (amended by Decree-Law no. 107/2008, 25th of June and by Decree-Law no. 230 / 2009, 14th of September and amended by statement of Rectification no. 81/2009, 27th of October, amended and republished by Decree-Law 115/2013, 07th of August) and in compliance with the Guidelines of Inter-University PhD Program in Social Work approved by the scientific entities of both associated organic units, is granted by a specific jury, according to article 34th of the same diploma, considering the classifications obtained in the curricular units of the Doctoral Course and the quality of the PhD thesis examined in a public act of defense.
In order to successfully complete the Course it is necessary to achieve 60 ECTS. The classification is expressed from 10 to 20, on a scale of 0 to 20 values, and in its equivalent on the European scale of comparability of ratings. After the completion of the Course a Diploma of Advanced Studies in the scientific field of the course will be awarded.
In order to enroll in the PhD thesis, it is mandatory to complete all curricular units of the Doctoral Course, obtaining a minimum quantitative grade of 14 marks and a qualitative grade of Good, as well as the presentation and prior approval by a jury of the Thesis Project.

Learning Objectives and Intended Skills

The obj.of the Course is to train specialists able to develop and consolidate a heuristic and complex thinking on the social and economic reality,as well as on the public policies and respective impacts within a perspective of reflexivity and transformation of social practices.At the end of the program,the students must have developed the skills for the:
Systematic and in-depth understanding of social reality and an expanded and updated knowledge of the paradigms of SW,its concepts,theories,methods and techniques
Dev. of research skills and the respective applicability in socio-political field
Design,planning and impl. of a significant research in the field of SW,achieving high standards of quality and academic integrity
Critical analysis,assessment and dissemination of innovative and complex ideas
Communication with the academic community and with society in gen.about the sc. area of SW and,in particular,on its sp.,making clear its foundations,procedures and conclusions of their analysis.

Graduation Requirements

The PhD degree is granted to candidates who have successfully completed the Doctoral Course and the public act of defense of the Final Thesis, under Articles 31 and 35 of Decree-Law 74/2006, 24th of March, in its current wording.
