General Objectives of the Course

The proposed program aims to offer an interdisciplinary program of European Studies, with a focus on structural core themes in this field of study, particularly on the European integration process and international systems. The curriculum introduces on the one hand, an articulated set of classes which aim to provide a more comprehensive and preliminary clinical knowledge, and secondly, and more importantly, the deepening of more specific content, but that does not translate into a specialization, which is reserved for postgraduate studies of a second sequential program.
Students will acquire solid skills in the area of European Studies - enabling not only the ability to learn to communicate, recreate and apply the knowledge and know how to find solutions to specific problems in that area, but also to think about the problems holistically and exercise intellectual autonomy and critical thinking.

Examination Regulations, Assessment and Grading

As assessment is a pedagogical activity inseparable from the teaching process, its aim is to establish the students' competencies and knowledge, their critical sense, ability to recognize and resolve problems, as well as their written and oral presentation skills. Students may only register for exams for classes they are currently registered for under the terms of number 6 of article 4 of the University of Coimbra Pedagogical Policy. The following are examples of assessment factors: Oral or written exams, written or practical work, individual and group projects that may require an oral defense, as well as class participation. Assessment for each class may include one or more of the above mentioned factors. Grading is based on a scale of 0 to 20 and a grade of 10 is required to pass. Whenever assessment includes more than one item, the final grade is calculated by taking into account the relative weight of each item according to a formula published in the course outline under the terms of number 2 of article 7 of the UC Pedagogical Policy.

Learning Objectives and Intended Skills

Prepares students to think of Europe as a historical and cultural process (general European history and cultural sources, historical process of European integration) and as a geopolitical set (territory and population, crises and conflicts, relations, international and organic systems), providing both tools of a preliminary nature (within economics and political science) as a framework of theoretical reflection (theory and political philosophy, ideas of Europe) and as practical knowledge associated with different areas of the so-called European construction (history, political system, legal system, economic governance, policies, EU) external relations.
Without underestimating the dimension of national and European nationality (participation of Portugal in Europe and in the European Union, citizenship and human rights), this class aims to combine the acquisition of general skills training to more specific training, with substantive impact on the process of European integration.

Recognition of Prior Learning

Recognition of prior learning is carried out in accordance with the Academic Regulation of the University of Coimbra.

Qualification Requirements and Regulations

The legal framework for the qualification is established by the decrees: Decree-Law nr 74/2006, 24th March, in its current wording; Ordinance nr 782/2009, 23rd July.

Graduation Requirements

Achievement of the passing grade in a set of curricular units that amount to a total of 180 ECTS.
