General Objectives of the Course

The goal of the 1st cycle in Art Studies is to grant students a degree of critical independence based on a robust cultural and artistic knowledge, namely in the fields of Cinema, Music and Theater, and their various intersections. The course has an essentially reflective nature and is directed to the training of cultural consultants, critics, managers and programmers. Nevertheless, the course may also encourage students to pursue training of a more practical nature, posing itself as an introductory and conceptual training.

Professional Goals

Programmer, Cultural Manager or Advisor in cultural centers, museums, cinematheques, cinemas and theaters, orchestras, theater companies, publishing houses, foundations, associations, municipalities, private companies, etc. - Author, Producer or Assistant in cultural and artistic projects in the fields of cinema, photography and audiovisual media, music, theater and performing arts in general. - Teacher or researcher. - Cultural journalist. This program prepares students for a career and requires an ability to reason, discussion, analysis of ideas, concepts and complex problems.

Examination Regulations, Assessment and Grading

As assessment is a pedagogical activity inseparable from the teaching process, its aim is to establish the students' competencies and knowledge, their critical sense, ability to recognize and resolve problems, as well as their written and oral presentation skills. Students may only register for exams for classes they are currently registered for under the terms of number 6 of article 4 of the University of Coimbra Pedagogical Policy. The following are examples of assessment items: Oral or written exams, written or practical work, individual and group projects that may require an oral defense, as well as class participation. Assessment for each class may include one or more of the above mentioned items. Grading is based on a scale of 0 to 20 and a grade of 10 is required to pass. Whenever assessment includes more than one item, the final grade is calculated by taking into account the relative weight of each item according to a formula published in the course outline under the terms of number 2 of article 7 of the UC Pedagogical Policy.

Learning Objectives and Intended Skills

The goal of the cycle of studies is to help students develop a solid critical spirit, making them able to deal with a constantly changing artistic, social and political reality.
More specifically, students should develop:
A solid and thorough knowledge of the History of Humankind combined with the History of Arts;
The critical mastery of the main works, references and contexts of the three main fields of the course;
The ability to reflect on the historical and artistic processes in a theoretical and creative manner.
The ability to approach the artistic object in a crossdisciplinary manner;
The competence to participate in the elaboration of the projects of artistic and cultural programming.
The ability to recognize and appreciate the social and patrimonial value of Art, as well as the reflection on the same subject.
At a more operational level, students should develop their:
i) ability to analyze and summarize sources of complex information, ii) sense of initiative, iii) planning and management of projects, iv) team work skills, v) oral and written expression.

Recognition of prior learning is carried out in accordance with the Academic Regulation of the University of Coimbra.

Qualification Requirements and Regulations

The legal framework for the qualification is established by the decrees: Decree-Law nr 74/2006, 24th March, in its current wording; Ordinance nr 782/2009, 23rd July.

Graduation Requirements

Achievement of the passing grade in a set of curricular units that amount to a total of 180 ECTS.
