Training Course in Latin for Juridical Sciences I

General Objectives of the Course

- Problematize ius and lex several related concepts, under an etymological and semantic point of view, by taking as starting point the functional study of Latin expressions.
- Learn Latin main syntactic structures from the sentences legal corpus .
- Reflect on the mechanisms of auctoritas of juris prudentia dependent on the use of Latin axioms (brocardus).
- Understand Law’s epistemic and legal-philosophical roots by by interpreting and critical analysis of the sentences.
- Identify and distinguish the philological differences between sentence, proverb, aphorism, maxim and brocardus, understand their fixed structures and the relevance of its uses.
- Recognize the Latin structures underneath legal terms fixed structures.
-Understand lexical-semantic meaning by deconstructing the words under an historical and etymological point of view
- Know the classical authors which are the root and the genesis of Roman law.

Learning Objectives and Intended Skills

- Recognition of roots and foundational arrays of the History of Roman Law.
- Understand the legal-technical message conveyed in Latin expressions, in all its lexical-semantic and historical dimensions.
- Resourcefulness in reading Latin and in analysising aphorisms.
- Ability to problematize statements in latin if concerning jurisprudence.
- Mastery of basic Latin syntactic and grammatical structures.
- Ability to problematize juridic matters by deconstructing sentences formal structure.
- Understanding the lexical semantics of Latin utterances in a legal context.
- Optimization of rhetorical and argumentative expression in Portuguese
- Adequate and appropriate handling of legal aphorisms in latin

Regulation n.º 339/2012, published in Official Gazette no. 152, 2. Grade, August 7th (Regulation of Creation and Operation of non-degree courses at the UC).

Graduation Requirements

As a rule, continuous assessment is the preferential regime to assess our students’ knowledge which requires 75% attendance and completion of two assessment tests. Other elements such as class participation, homework and tasks performed throughout the course, are also taken into account for evaluation. At the end of each level, students can request the corresponding certificate, if the course has been successfully completed.
