General Objectives of the Course

- Contribute to provide a deeper understanding of the ideological genesis of Western Culture.
- Demonstrate the timeliness of Latin matrix in Portuguese culture and its importance to find answers to contemporary anxieties .
- Promote national identity and linguistic heritage.
- Enhance communication skills and the mastery of Portuguese language .
- Promote the development of language as a tool for a clear expression of thought: rhetorical and argumentative skills.
- Confirm the lexical-semantic relationship between Portuguese and Latin language
- Critically evaluate the values transmitted to the present time
- Identify the reception of Latin matrix in contemporary cultural expression.
- Increasing the interest in Contemporary Portuguese Culture as the heir and historical memory of the ancient culture.
- Deepen the knowledge of linguistic structures of Latin
- Promote the autonomy on analysing and reading Latin

Learning Objectives and Intended Skills

- Ability to independently read and understand a Latin text.
- Ability to establish comparative analyzes between Latin language and culture and Portuguese language and culture.
- Develop the hermeneutic and interpretive reasoning on literary contents,
through the translation of Latin authors texts.
- Proficiency in the analysis of the Latin text in a new scenario of translation.
- Transfer and articulation of knowledge between the two linguistic systems.
- Resourcefulness in syntactic parsing and translation of Latin.
- Historical and lexical-semantic inferences to Portuguese.
- Problematization and philosophical reflection of the authors.
- Recognition the epistemic assumptions in contemporary Literature and Philosophy.

Graduation Requirements

As a rule, continuous assessment is the preferential regime to assess our students’ knowledge which requires 75% attendance and completion of two assessment tests. Other elements such as class participation, homework and tasks performed throughout the course, are also taken into account for evaluation. At the end of each level, students can request the corresponding certificate, if the course has been successfully completed.
