General Objectives of the CourseThe general fundamental goal of the study cycle is to graduate skill professionals capable of following or contributing at the level of scientific and technological innovation in the domain of Environment Engineering,
providing the students with a sound education and training in structuring areas such as mathematics, physics, chemical, biology, besides those specific related to planning, conception and design, execution and management of all types of territorial interventions aimed at fulfilling social needs. It is simultaneously
intended to encourage the students to valorize the skills and personal attitudes required for the professional activity, namely scientific thinking and creativeness, criticism and sense of responsibility, the autonomous learning, for interacting and working in group and with multidisciplinary teams, for self-adaptation, communication, for self-demand, the valorizing of knowledge, always without ever losing sight of the promotion of sustainable development.

Professional GoalsDue to their high-quality training, Masters graduates are able to perform tasks in a wide range of job profiles, particularly in:
• environmental planning and design firms
• consulting firms
• industrial and commercial enterprises in the environment sector
• municipal environmental departments
• state general and regional directorates in the environment sector
• public institutions in the environment sector
• laboratories and research institutions
Graduates may also apply for a PhD and start a research career.

Examination Regulations, Assessment and GradingAs assessment is a pedagogical activity inseparable from the teaching process, its aim is to establish the students' competencies and knowledge, their critical sense, ability to recognize and resolve problems, as well as their written and oral presentation skills. Students may only register for exams for classes they are currently registered for under the terms of number 6 of article 4 of the University of Coimbra Pedagogical Policy. The following are examples of assessment items: Oral or written exams, written or practical work, individual and group projects that may require an oral defense, as well as class participation. Assessment for each class may include one or more of the above mentioned items. Grading is based on a scale of 0 to 20 and a grade of 10 is required to pass. Whenever assessment includes more than one item, the final grade is calculated by taking into account the relative weight of each item according to a formula published in the course outline under the terms of number 2 of article 7 of the UC Pedagogical Policy.
Learning Objectives and Intended SkillsThe overall objective of the learning process is that the students, at the end of the study cycle, command the use of engineering concepts and techniques required for the intervention in the domains under the scope of the
Environmental Engineering profession. In order to accomplish this general objective, the study cycle aims at achieving the following specific goals: i) to
provide a strong education in basic sciences, namely mathematics, physics and computation, which may prepare the students with the theoretical knowledge essential for further understanding more specialized and technological contents; ii) to provide wide range training, with deep analysis and insight in the essential formative aspects of the technical and scientific areas of Environmental Engineering; iii) to provide a preliminary specialization in one of these areas.
In order to implement these three specific objectives, the course structure consists of four years of compulsory common curricular contents and a specialization year in one of the two following scientific areas: Territory and
Environmental Management or Technology and Environmental Management. This course structure aims at providing the students, in the first four years, with a wide range of scientific and technical knowledge, complemented with stateof-the-art knowledge in one of the specialization areas in the fifth year. With the
knowledge and understanding of the subjects taught in the curricular units of the study cycle, it is expected that the students develop their skills in solving problems, in experimental work, using the theoretical concepts in
practical problems and, in a more advanced level, in analysis and synthesis capability which, as the rational basis for conception, planning and design, are of utmost importance for the engineering practice.
Besides these skills of specific nature related to Environmental Engineering, the strategies, the adopted teaching methods and the evaluation processes of the curricular units may also provide the students other types of competences, uselful from the personal and civic points of view and also important for the future unrestricted professional exercise, such as communication capacity with either expert or general publics, autonomous learning, criticism and sense of responsibility, information management, cooperation with groups or multidisciplinary teams, etc.
The procedure used to evaluate the degree of fulfillment of the educational objectives consists mainly of the results of the enquiries to students and teachers, the results and monitorization of the approval rates and the
feedback from employers.

Recognition of Prior LearningStudents who have taken other engineering courses may be granted equivalence in some course subjects.
The equivalences are defined in terms of the content and workload of the subjects taken.
