General Objectives of the CourseObjectives
The Integrated Master’s in Civil Engineering (MIEC) of DEC-FCTUC started in the 2007-2008 school year, replacing the previous degree in Civil Engineering. It was necessary to adapt the Civil Engineering course to a new format compatible with the guidelines set by the Protocol of Bologna. The curricular structure and content are intended to provide a solid academic background that ensures professionalism in the several field of civil engineering.
MIEC is divided into two cycles. In the first cycle, which has a three-year duration, students are granted a Bachelor’s degree in Civil Engineering Sciences. It essentially consists of general courses (Mathematics, Physics, Chemistry, Drawing, Statistics, etc.) and basic training in Civil Engineering. Students must achieve a total of 180 ECTS in order to complete the 1st cycle.
Students who completed the 1st cycle have direct access to the 2nd cycle, which has a two-year duration and corresponds to the Master’s degree. In the last year students are to attend courses from one of the six areas of expertise Civil Engineering and to write their Master’s dissertation.
Students must obtain a total of 120 ECTS, 60 in each year. Therefore, students must achieve a total of 300 ECTS in order to get the Master’s degree.

Professional GoalsAll career opportunities which are possible for graduates in civil engineering, including: planning, direction, construction sites management or supervision, project, management, consultancy, etc.
Graduates may work in any sector of civil engineering: construction, banking and insurance, mining or manufacturing, services, central or local government, or personal initiatives (businessman or liberal professional).
Although most graduates start their professional life in Portugal, the potential market for job recruitment is now virtually unlimited. In fact, there are Portuguese engineers in almost all continents and in many European countries, either working in companies or working by their own personal initiative.

Examination Regulations, Assessment and GradingAs assessment is a pedagogical activity inseparable from the teaching process, its aim is to establish the students' competencies and knowledge, their critical sense, ability to recognize and resolve problems, as well as their written and oral presentation skills. Students may only register for exams for classes they are currently registered for under the terms of number 6 of article 4 of the University of Coimbra Pedagogical Policy. The following are examples of assessment items: Oral or written exams, written or practical work, individual and group projects that may require an oral defense, as well as class participation. Assessment for each class may include one or more of the above mentioned items. Grading is based on a scale of 0 to 20 and a grade of 10 is required to pass. Whenever assessment includes more than one item, the final grade is calculated by taking into account the relative weight of each item according to a formula published in the course outline under the terms of number 2 of article 7 of the UC Pedagogical Policy.
