Master's Degree in Classical Studies

General Objectives of the Course

Provide continuity for the graduate course in Classical Studies; allow for candidates from other areas to obtain specialization in this area; deepen the knowledge of Greek and Latin cultures and literatures in Classical and Late Antiquity, as well as its impact in the Middle Ages and Renaissance, as key in undestanding contemporary culture; aplly Greek and Roman conceptualization to the interpretation of today's multiform culture and to recognize aspects of continuity and/or rupture with classical tradition, in themes, formas and historiographical thought; prepare the student to plan and develop autonomous research in Classical Studies and to present the resuluts as a dissertation, project or intership report; prepare the stuent to develop advanced research in universities, national and international research centers and international scientific societies.

Admission Requirements

a) Holders of a Bachelor’s degree or legal equivalent, in the areas of Classical Studies, Literature, Languages, Philosophy, Arts, History, Law, Communication; b) holders of a foreign higher academic degree, that was awarded after accomplishing a 1st cycle of studies; c) holders of a foreign higher academic degree that is recognized to meet the objectives of the Bachelor’s degree by the Scientific Council of the Faculty of Arts and Humanities; d) In duly justified cases, holders of a scientific or professional curriculum, which is recognized as attesting the capacity to accomplish this cycle of studies by the Scientific Council of the Faculty of Arts and Humanities.

Professional Goals

The syllabus taught in this 2nd cycle allows professionals and persons with a degree in other areas to obtain further education in Classical Studies. Masters in this subject are able to perform professionally in the following areas: research in Classical Studies, Philosophy, Literature, Greek and Latin Philology, History of Ideas, Medieval and Renaissance Studies; they are also able to act as scientific advisors in publishing and in libraries, museums and archives, or in public or private Administration and cultural institutions.

Examination Regulations, Assessment and Grading

As assessment is a pedagogical activity inseparable from the teaching process, its aim is to establish the students' competencies and knowledge, their critical sense, ability to recognize and resolve problems, as well as their written and oral presentation skills. Students may only register for exams for classes they are currently renrolled. The following are examples of assessment items: Oral or written exams, written or practical work, individual and group projects that may require an oral defense, as well as class participation. Assessment for each class may include one or more of the above mentioned items. Grading is based on a scale of 0 to 20 and a grade of 10 is required to pass. Whenever the grade comprises more than one item, the final grade is calculated by taking into account the relative weight of each item.

Learning Objectives and Intended Skills

To know the Greek and Roman cultural matrix and the classical heritage which is at the base of European culture; identify the vitality of the classical legacy in Latin Medieval and Renaissance Culture; know the thought and works of the main classical authors and their influence on the Middle Ages and Renaissance; apply the classical legacy to the interpretative analysis of contemporary culture; interpret and analyze the main classical sources for literature and historiography; master the competences and tecniques necessary fot reading and editing Greek and Latin texts.

Graduation Requirements

To obtain the degree, students must be approved in the 1st year seminaries (60 ECTS) and perform with success the tasks implicit in the supervision seminary (15 ECTS) and in the preparation of a dissertation, a project or an internship / report (45 ECTS), making a total of 120 ECTS.
