PhD degree in Archeology

General Objectives of the Course

The PhD in Archaeology emerges as the natural outcome of the 1st and 2nd cycles (each one independent and running every year) both or them focusing this area of knowledge. It also intends to steadily consolidate the research carried out by the Professors of Archaeology which has earned nationally and internationally recognition). The third cycle aims, therefore, to respond to the expectations of all those who want to deepen their skills as researchers in this specific area. This degree enables its holders to access to a wider range of options such as the scientific direction of projects in this area. It will foster an improved professional framework to the projects developed, promoting good practices, particularly in actions of valorization of patrimony or of planning.

Examination Regulations, Assessment and Grading

As assessment is a pedagogical activity inseparable from the teaching process, its aim is to establish the students' competencies and knowledge, their critical sense, ability to recognize and resolve problems, as well as their written and oral presentation skills. Students may only register for exams for classes they are currently registered for under the terms of number 6 of article 4 of the University of Coimbra Pedagogical Policy. The following are examples of assessment items: Oral or written exams, written or practical work, individual and group projects that may require an oral defense, as well as class participation. Assessment for each class may include one or more of the above mentioned items. Grading is based on a scale of 0 to 20 and a grade of 10 is required to pass. Whenever assessment includes more than one item, the final grade is calculated by taking into account the relative weight of each item according to a formula published in the course outline under the terms of number 2 of article 7 of the UC Pedagogical Policy.

Learning Objectives and Intended Skills

a) the ability to conceive and draw, autonomously, wider research projects with the expectable coherence, feasibility and seriousness;
b) the ability to do team work and to engage in scientific dialogue with experts from other areas, promoting, as a result, interdisciplinarity, i.e., the convergence of different fields (including the emergent ones), creating synergies as a way of potentiating research in archeology;
c) the ability to produce and disseminate relevant historical knowledge (nationally and internationally) through the participation in scientific meetings and through the prompt publication of the results of their research;
d) the ability to lead research projects with a social and scientific outcome and, as a consequence, contribute for the elevation of the patterns of demand, quality and prestige of the national archeology, as well as to lead actions concerning the territorial planning and a heritage enhancement and requalification with visible social and economical effects
