Master degree in Curatorial Studies

General Objectives of the Course

The need for the creation of a Master in Curatorial Studies stems from the expansion of the artistic mediation
systems in a globalized world, but also from the recognition that curatorial training provides adequate
competencies to the diverse tasks of sensibilizing audiences to contemporary art, its public critical presentation
and the integration in museological structures.
The MCS aims to train professionals in artistic mediation able to integrate institutions devoted to the production
and artistic mediation, either museums, exhibition spaces, galleries, or support the taking care of art collections.It
also aims to develop specific skills in the development of contemporary art cultural programs.

Can apply to this course those who:
- have a 1st degree in Architecture, Fine Arts, Artistic Studies, Philosophy, History of Art, Sociology or other
academic, cultural, artistic or professional legally considered as proficiency to the course.

Examination Regulations, Assessment and Grading

As assessment is a pedagogical activity inseparable from the teaching process, its aim is to establish the students' competencies and knowledge, their critical sense, ability to recognize and resolve problems, as well as their written and oral presentation skills. Students may only register for exams for classes they are currently registered for under the terms of number 6 of article 4 of the University of Coimbra Pedagogical Policy. The following are examples of assessment items: Oral or written exams, written or practical work, individual and group projects that may require an oral defense, as well as class participation. Assessment for each class may include one or more of the above mentioned items. Grading is based on a scale of 0 to 20 and a grade of 10 is required to pass. Whenever assessment includes more than one item, the final grade is calculated by taking into account the relative weight of each item according to a formula published in the course outline under the terms of number 2 of article 7 of the UC Pedagogical Policy.

Learning Objectives and Intended Skills

The Master in Curatorial Studies intends to develop in the students the following skills:
1. Deepen the knowledge of contemporary art acquired in the students former academic career.
2. To produce situations of real confrontation between artistic proposals and the audiences and their curatorial
framework.
3. To know and use fluently critical and aesthetic criteria
4. To master the critical discourse of contemporary art
5. To structure and mediate artistic knowledge
6. To be able of writing diferent types of critical texts
