General Objectives of the Course

Biology, especially in its translational and interdisciplinary aspects is a fundamental Science in the 21rst Century, and all indicators point to an increased investment in related fields in the next decades, namely in terms of Experimental Biology and Biomedicine. Given the critical mass at the University of Coimbra (including Faculty of Science and Technology, Pharmacy and Medicine, as well as Research Centers and Hospitals) this is a niche of excellence that urges further development. Scientific training in this field must be flexible and involve researchers with different backgrounds and approaches in order to train excellent professionals that can then enter different job markets (academia, services, biotechnology).

Admission Requirements

The Program is open to candidates wit ha Life and Health Sciences background (Masters, Bologna version; or B.Sc preBologna), or other candidates with a recognizable CV that the Board for the Program considers relevant. Admission and selection/ranking criteria are ratified by IIIUC, following initial proposals from the Program Board, and following general UC indications.

Examination Regulations, Assessment and Grading

As assessment is a pedagogical activity inseparable from the teaching process, its aim is to establish the students' competencies and knowledge, their critical sense, ability to recognize and resolve problems, as well as their written and oral presentation skills. Students may only register for exams for classes they are currently registered for under the terms of number 6 of article 4 of the University of Coimbra Pedagogical Policy. The following are examples of assessment items: Oral or written exams, written or practical work, individual and group projects that may require an oral defense, as well as class participation. Assessment for each class may include one or more of the above mentioned items. Grading is based on a scale of 0 to 20 and a grade of 10 is required to pass. Whenever the grade comprises more than one item, the final grade is calculated by taking into account the relative weight of each item according a formula published in the course outline under the terms of number 2 of article 7 of the UC Pedagogical Policy. Succesful conclusion of all courses. Thesis delivery and defense following rules and procedures of the University.

Learning Objectives and Intended Skills

Following conceptual and methodological training in different areas of Experimental Biology and Biomedicine the students should have developed critical thinking and organizational skills, and be able to perform innovative and original outsanding Doctoral , thus becoming autonomous and highly specialized scientists.

Succesful conclusion of all courses. Thesis delivery and defense following rules and procedures of the University.
