Doctoral Programme in Sociology

General Objectives of the Course

This cycle of studies is an advanced training programme aimed at developing both scientific research competences and high-level professional qualifications in sociology, as well as an interdisciplinary interchange between sociology and other scientific areas. It is based on the theoretical and methodological matrix, and develops both broad and specific subjects according to the timeliness of research subjects and analytical interest shown by certain, more contextualized social processes. The main objective of this programme is to contribute to advance theoretical, methodological and empirical knowledge in sociology, with a particular emphasis on the knowledge of Portuguese, European and Latin-American realities, and in particular regarding social, political, and cultural transformation dynamics in these societies, as well as to promote conditions to apply such knowledge in an administrative and technical intervention context.

Admission Requirements

1. Candidates can apply for access to the cycle of studies leading to the doctor's degree:
a) hold a Master’s degree, or legal equivalent;
b) be holders of an Undergraduate Degree, with especially relevant academic or scientific curricula, acknowledged as possessing the necessary competences to be accepted to this study cycle by the Scientific Board of the Faculty of Economics;
c) be holders of academic, scientific or professional curricula, acknowledged as possessing the necessary competences to be accepted to this study cycle by the Scientific Board of the Faculty of Economics. The recognition referred to in subparagraphs b) and c) of paragraph 1 only allows access to the cycle of studies leading to a PhD Degree and does not grant its holder the recognition or equivalence to a Bachelor’s or Master’s Degree.

Professional Goals

Doctoral graduates in Sociology have qualifications for exercising multiple, different functions in the scope of public administration, companies, organizations and non-governmental organizations, as well as in teaching and research institutions, in fields related to social politics, including local politics, social inequalities, justice, social integration, heritage management, teaching and school administration, employment, health and culture.

Examination Regulations, Assessment and Grading

As assessment is a pedagogical activity inseparable from the teaching process, its aim is to establish the students' competencies and knowledge, their critical sense, ability to recognize and resolve problems, as well as their written and oral presentation skills. Students may only register for exams for classes they are currently registered for under the terms of number 6 of article 4 of the University of Coimbra Pedagogical Policy. The following are examples of assessment items: Oral or written exams, written or practical work, individual and group projects that may require an oral defense, as well as class participation. Assessment for each class may include one or more of the above mentioned items. Grading is based on a scale of 0 to 20 and a grade of 10 is required to pass. Whenever the grade comprises more than one item, the final grade is calculated by taking into account the relative weight of each item according a formula published in the course outline under the terms of number 2 of article 7 of the UC Pedagogical Policy.

Learning Objectives and Intended Skills

Acquisition of advanced knowledge in a particular area of Physics, complementing that obtained at a Master’s level in Physics or similar field.
- Development of competences, abilities and research methods in a particular field of Physics.
- Development of ability to autonomously conceive, design and perform original research work of high quality according to international standards.
- Development of critical analysis skills and of ability to synthesise new ideas and perspetives.
- Development of communication skills – with pairs, with the scientific community and with the society – in a particular area of physics.

Recognition of prior learning is carried out in accordance with the Academic Regulation of the University of Coimbra.

Graduation Requirements

The doctoral programme lasts for 3 years (6 semesters) and includes a taught component in the first year. Attendance and approval in first year seminars are required for the development of a Qualification Exam at the end of the first year, during which a dissertation project will be presented to a jury, whose approval is required for access to writing the dissertation. The dissertation will be defended in a public examination. This programme leads to a doctoral degree in Sociology by the University of Coimbra.

Access to Further Studies

Doctoral graduates will be able to access post-doctoral programmes, namely in the field of Sociology.
