Professional Goals

Bachelors will be professionals with skills and competences that allow them to enter quickly a labour market lacking in qualified professional staff in this branch of Health Sciences, being at their disposal a whole range of career opportunities, such as:
- clinical analysis laboratories;
- toxicology analysis laboratories;
- environment analysis laboratories;
- waste and effluent treatment facilities;
- quality control and management institutions, among other professional activities.
- This cycle of studies is also intended to harmonize training with the European Union countries, thus allowing free movement of professionals able to assure quality and safety of the services delivered to citizens within Bioanalytical Sciences applied to clinical biomedicine, environment, food industry, chemical industry and pharmaceutical industry.

Mode of Study

The course is delivered in full time or part time attendance and daytime schedule.

Examination Regulations, Assessment and Grading

As assessment is a pedagogical activity inseparable from the teaching process, its aim is to establish the students' competencies and knowledge, their critical sense, ability to recognize and resolve problems, as well as their written and oral presentation skills. Students may only register for exams for classes they are currently registered for under the terms of number 6 of article 4 of the University of Coimbra Pedagogical Policy. The following are examples of assessment items: Oral or written exams, written or practical work, individual and group projects that may require an oral defense, as well as class participation. Assessment for each class may include one or more of the above mentioned items. Grading is based on a scale of 0 to 20 and a grade of 10 is required to pass. Whenever assessment includes more than one item, the final grade is calculated by taking into account the relative weight of each item according to a formula published in the course outline under the terms of number 2 of article 7 of the UC Pedagogical Policy.

Learning Objectives and Intended Skills

The Bachelor’s Degree in Bioanalytical Sciences provides specialized and multi-faceted training in pre-analytical and analytical areas applied to the control of public health, in their clinical, food and environmental dimensions. In addition, this study cycle also enables students to perform different functions in areas related to the management and quality control in public health, as well as research and development activities in bioanalytical fields. The curricular framework of this study cycle is set according to its objectives involving: Basic Training in Mathematics, Physics, Chemistry and Biology; Preanalytical Training (instrumental analysis, Hematologic, Biochemical, Immunological and Molecular Biology), which imparts skills in techniques applicable to different types of patterns in the field of Public Health; Analytical Training (specialization) with quantitative analysis of biological and chemical parameters as essential elements in the context of public health.
