General Objectives of the Course

The Public and Private Administration Programme is designed to provide students with a rigorous training on Administration studies, the main thrust of which being the idea that, no matter how multiple or heteregeneous the tasks are, or how multipolar and diverse (both organically and structurally) the centres of power, the goal of Administration service is the pursuit of public interest under the law. Nevertheless, the growing complexity of Administration also requires skills in other scientific areas (e.g., in Management), without which Administration officials and researchers cannot figure out nor solve economy-, finance-, accounting or management-related issues that s/he will have to face.

Admission Requirements

National Call for Access and Entry to Higher Education (DGES):

Examination Regulations, Assessment and Grading

Since assessment is a pedagogical activity inseparable from the teaching process, its aim is to establish the students' skills and training, their critical sense, ability to recognize and resolve problems, as well as their written and oral presentation skills. Students may only register for exams in courses they are currently registered for under the terms of number 6 of article 4 of the University of Coimbra Pedagogical Policy. The following are examples of assessment items: Oral or written exams, written or practical work, individual and group projects that may require an oral defense, as well as class participation. Assessment for each course may include one or more of the above mentioned items. Grading is based on a scale of 0 to 20 and a grade of 10 is required to pass. Whenever assessment includes more than one item, the final grade is calculated by taking into account the relative weight of each item according to a formula published in the course outline under the terms of number 2 of article 7 of the UC Pedagogical Policy.

Learning Objectives and Intended Skills

The Study Cycle aims: 1) to provide students with training in the Law and Management areas in order to enable them take senior responsibilities in Public Administration at the national, international or EU levels; 2) provide an adequate balance between cross-cutting training and specialized training by means of the courses needed to understand the various realities.
shaping the institutional and functional complexities of the market in the public and private realm of Administration; 3) provide the skills needed for autonomous, rigorous and responsibly creative performance of the tasks, by knowing how to do, propose and transmit the solutions and the results achieved.

Recognition of prior learning is carried out in accordance with the Academic Regulation of the University of Coimbra.

Graduation Requirements

Achievement of the passing grade in a set of curricular units that amount to a total of 180 ECTS.

Access to Further Studies

Acess to further studies:
The conclusion of the First Cycle in Public and Private Administration allows the access to the Second Cycle of Studies of various areas of knowledge
