Examination Regulations, Assessment and Grading

Though inseparable from teaching, assessment is intended to evaluate the knowledge and competences acquired by students, as well as their critical thinking skills, their ability to identify and solve problems and their oral and written expression.
Students admitted to examination are those registered in the curricular units in the relevant academic year and, if required, have also registered in the exams, under nr. 7, art. 5, Regulamento Pedagógico da Universidade de Coimbra (Pedagogical Regulation of the University of Coimbra).
Assessment elements can include written or oral exam, tests, written or practical assignments, as well as individual or group projects that may require an oral discussion, and students’ overall participation in classes. Assessment of each curricular unit may include one or more of the aforementioned elements. The grade obtained by a student in each curricular unit is a whole number between 0 and 20. A final score of 10 grants a pass. The pass mark is 10 points. When assessment of a curricular unit comprises more than one assessment element, the final mark is calculated on the basis of the different marks the student has obtained in each assessment element using a predetermined formula, in accordance with nr. 1, art. 8, Regulamento Pedagógico da Universidade de Coimbra (Pedagogical Regulation of the University of Coimbra).
