Master’s degree in Art Studies

General Objectives of the Course

The course deepens and consolidates the generalist training acquired in the first cycle, providing the opportunity to specialize in one of the three available areas: Musicology, Film Studies and Theatre Studies. This degree focuses mainly on the theoretical component, which enables students to acquire a more profound knowledge of the conceptual, institutional and material articulations of the art forms under analysis. In each one of these fields, students should develop the following competences: - understand their history; - differentiate their components; - acquire their critical vocabulary; - know the mechanisms and criteria of aesthetic appreciation, - be able to produce critical texts, - structure and convey knowledge of the arts, - carry out creative experiments, exploring the enormous diversity of techniques, themes and forms of expression of each one of these forms of art. Research is conducted both in the archives and in the contemporary creative universe.

Admission Requirements

In accordance with Article 17, number 1, of Decree-Law no. 115/2013, eligible candidates to this MA course include:
a) Holders of a BA or a legally equivalent degree;
b) Holders of a foreign BA degree structured in accordance with the principles of the Bologna Process by a signatory state;
c) Holders of a foreign higher education degree recognized to meet the objectives of the BA degree;
d) Holders of academic, scientific or professional qualifications considered appropriate for the attendance of this course.

Professional Goals

Programmer, Cultural Manager or Advisor in cultural centres, museums, cinematheques, cinemas and theatres, orchestras, theatre companies, publishing houses, foundations, associations, municipalities, business structures, etc. - Author, Producer or Assistant in cultural and artistic projects in the fields of cinema, photography and audiovisual media, music, theatre and performing arts in general. - Teacher or researcher. - Cultural journalist.

Examination Regulations, Assessment and Grading

As assessment is a pedagogical activity inseparable from the teaching process, its aim is to establish the students' competencies and knowledge, their critical sense, ability to recognize and resolve problems, as well as their written and oral presentation skills. Students may only register for exams for classes they are currently registered for under the terms of number 6 of article 4 of the University of Coimbra Pedagogical Policy. The following are examples of assessment items: Oral or written exams, written or practical work, individual and group projects that may require an oral defense, as well as class participation. Assessment for each class may include one or more of the above mentioned items. Grading is based on a scale of 0 to 20 and a grade of 10 is required to pass. Whenever assessment includes more than one item, the final grade is calculated by taking into account the relative weight of each item according to a formula published in the course outline under the terms of number 2 of article 7 of the UC Pedagogical Policy.

Learning Objectives and Intended Skills

After obtaining the Master's Degree in this cycle of studies, students should possess a critical view of both culture and art, namely in the specific fields of Film, Theatre and Music. They should also acquire practical competences of research and production of knowledge in one of those fields, or in a combination of them; knowledge transfer practices through projects of creation or cultural and artistic programming; and assistance practices within the cultural and creative industries.

Recognition of prior learning is carried out in accordance with the Academic Regulation of the University of Coimbra.

Qualification Requirements and Regulations

The legal framework for the qualification is established by the decrees: Decree-Law no 74/2006, 24th March, in its current wording; Ordinance nº 782/2009, 23rd July.

Graduation Requirements

To obtain this Master’s degree, students should successfully accomplish all curricular units of the first and second academic years and the elaboration of a dissertation, an internship’s report or a project to be submitted to a scientific jury for public defense.
