Professional Goals

The capabilities and skills relating to Pharmacist are duly typified in Directive 2005/36/EC. Also the "Pharmaceutical Act" in the Statutes of the Portuguese Pharmaceutical Society describes very well the activities that fall within the acquired competences in the Course (Community and hospital pharmacy, pharmaceutical, chemical and food industries, clinical trials, regulatory affairs related to medicine and health products, as well as others activities related to the patients, to medicines and to public health).

The course is delivered in full time or part time attendance and daytime schedule.

Examination Regulations, Assessment and Grading

The examination regulations, assessments and grading are established by the Pharmacy Faculty of the University of Coimbra Pedagogical Regulation.

Learning Objectives and Intended Skills

The MICF shall provide an assurance that the student concerned has acquired the following knowledge and skills:
a) Adequate knowledge of medicines and the substances used in the manufacture of medicines;
b) Adequate knowledge of pharmaceutical technology and the physical, chemical, biological and microbiological testing of medicinal products;
c) Adequate knowledge of the metabolism and the effects of medicinal products and of the action of toxic substances, and of the use of medicinal products;
d) Adequate knowledge to evaluate scientific data concerning medicines in order to be able to supply appropriate information on the basis of this knowledge;
e) Adequate knowledge of the legal and other requirements associated with the pursuit of community pharmacies;
f) Preparation, testing, storage and distribution of medicines in community pharmacies;
g) Preparation, testing, storage and distribution of medicines in hospitals;
h) Provide information and advice about medicines.

Recognition of Prior Learning

Recognition of prior learning is carried out in accordance with the Academic Regulation of the University of Coimbra.

Qualification Requirements and Regulations

The legal framework for the qualification is established by the decrees: Decree-Law no. 74/2006, 24th March, amended and republished by the decree: DL no 107/2008, 25th June; Ordinance no. 782/2009, 23rd de July.

Graduation Requirements

The Master degree is only awarded after completion of the curricular component and the presentation, public discussion and approval of the Monograph and Internship Report.

Access to Further Studies

This degree enables graduate students to work as pharmacists and grants admission to higher education, namely to 3rd cycle studies (PhD).
